Engaging tales of piracy

This is a wonderful book written in the early 1700's. I enjoyed reading in tropical Caribbean evenings while smoking Cuban cigars and sipping rum from Martinique. If you don't enjoy first person history, go watch television and play games on your smartphone.

Inspiring for All Mental Strengths

177 Mental Toughness Secrets of the World Class by Steve Siebold is a very informative and insightful book. I too only wish that I would have known about this book sooner, but at least I know now. The following are some passages of the book that I found very helpful and that resonated with me (and to share with others a glimpse of this great information):

Pg. 60 secret #28: Champions are Comeback Artists: I enjoy how the author gives helpful tidbits on examples of people that have pulled themselves up by their bootstraps. The fact that he lists this lesson as perserverance on the physical plane, toughness on the mental plane, and artistry on the spiritual place is very inspiring.
pg. 114 secret #70: The Great Ones are Products of their Own Imagination: The author mentions who champions combine action with imagination. The action step is really fun as well (he encourages you to allow your imagination to run wild with ideas of your perfect life).
Pg. 155 secret #99: The Great Ones are Aware of their Limitless Potential: This statement really stood out for me because I watched a really fun movie called Limitless that starred Bradley Cooper less than two months ago. The "Limitless" movie illustrated the potential realities possible when unlimited potential is tapped into. This is similiar to the message that I believe that author is trying to send with this secret when he emphasizes that champions wake up one day and realize that their possibilities and potentials that symbolize the unlimited arena.
Pg. 193 secret #124: The World Class Believes in Self-Reliance: Steve mentions how the core of fullfillment comes from within yourself and that the world class learns to rely on themselves to get the answers from within.
Pg. 196 secret #126: Champions are Bold and Daring Visionaries: Mr. Siebold mentions why the importance of keeping on your vision. The recommended action step is also very exciting: He mentions a plan to make a commitment to create the ultimate vision for your life in the next 30 days, and he gives the eight life components as a guidepost. The eight life components is very enlightening for me because I have been frequently getting the feeling to implement my vision, and thanks to coming across secret #126 I now am aware the areas of my life that are beneficial for that vision (some of the helpful areas Steve recommends are faith/spiritual, social/cultural and personal development).

I am a naturally emotionally tough person, and yet this book gave me some insights on how to take my mental fortitude further. However, this book is beneficial for all levels of mental toughness.

I have read hundreds of self-help books.This book was one of the most useful.

The cons:The book is like 2 breathless teenage boys looking at pictures of teenage girls.Every fifth word is "unbelievable" "amazing".The whole book has an phoniness to it.The style is very outdated,some sort of Amway rally style.Later when I went to their webpage it turns out Amway is one of his clients.

The pros:After you got resistant to their breathless style,you can benefit from the precise and concise list of attributes for success.Of course nothing is new but I still benefited "tremendously".

Great book for critical thinking skills

177 Mental Toughness Secrets of the World Class has some of the same information as every other motivational book, but it also has some new angles and most importantly it takes a critical thinking viewpoint of the information. Instead of being a rah rah, get you motivated for an hour type of book with no real substance, it details real actionable thinking steps to, if followed, lead to steady progress. It is not for everybody, if you are not really in the mindset and ready to truly look at your actions and habits and change what needs to be changed, than go find a rah rah book to give you a quick high. This book forces you to dig deep and ask yourself if you are really doing what it takes to achieve your goals and visions. I highly recommend for high achievers and those on there way to becoming one.

At the time when political, military and religius forces are active in the middle east, an updated version of the book by Haggai Eshed: "REUVEN SHILOAH - THE MAN BEHIND THE MOSSAD - Secret Diplomacy in the Creation of Israel" has been published in English.
The book which was originally published in Hebrew in 1988 tells the story of Reuven Shiloah, the founder of Israel's intelligence community and first head of the world famous MOSSAD.
The personality of Shiloah, who for years worked alongside the Jewish leadership in the pre-state years and during the first ten years after independence has almost been forgotten. Using newly opened and uncovered archives and first time interviews the book describes the exciting and mysterious life of Reuven Shiloah on the backround of some of the major events in the international arena in general and in the middle-east in particular during the years 1931-1959.
Some of the major activities described in the book are:
*Undercover work in Iraq in the 1930's.
*Intelligence ties with the Allies before and during world war 2.
*Paradroping Jewish activistes into occupied Europe.
*Forming and heading Israel's intelligence community after indipendence.
*Conducting secret negoatiations with king Abdallah of Jordan.
*Creating the base for the stratigic ties between Israel and the U.S.
*Forming secret treaties with Turkey, Iran and Ethiopia.
The book was written by the veteran journalist Haggai Eshed who passed away several months after the book was originaly published in 1988. The book is well researched and well written. A few of the issues raised remain unanswerd due to the scarcity of data and still classified documents.

Very motivating

You know, before I get into the nitty-gritty of this book, I just remembered that I had a primer in school with the title Never Give Up-of course, this was just another one of those "readers"-the title had nothing to do with the content. Anyway, what is in store for the reader is a collection of stories from a variety of self-made entrepreneurs and company owners, all containing anecdotes about success, all of which can revive the flagging faith we carry that we'll ever get to our dream destination, however we define it.

One quote I observed, I remember seeing somewhere that Vidal Sassoon is credited with: "Only in the dictionary does success come before work". I liked that one to the point of using it for a motivational poster I made once. And you'd be surrised to see how many of the people mentioned all started out shoveling snow, delivering papers, and generally building on their longtime hobbies and interests.

This is one of those books that can give you a much-needed kick in the pants; as it can be easier to see our destination when we learn that others before us blazed trails that started off with roadblocks or detours.

Exceptional Collection of Interviews

This is a fabulous collection of interviews with professionals from diverse types of businesses. Entrepreneurs and business leaders offer their perspectives and advice on how to achieve success. The author asks basic, but to me, tough to answer questions. My favorite answers are to the question: ‘Did you always know you’d be successful?’ The answers are thoughtful and fascinating. It really helps the reader seat him/herself in the mindset of an accomplished individual. There are a variety of voices here from women to people of color who shed light on the highs and lows of their career. This is a well conceived and compiled book. It will help motivate you and help you gain insight. Never give up!

Howard R. Pollio, PhD, is Alumni Professor of Psychology at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville.

He holds advanced degrees in both psychology and philosophy, and has published research primarily in cognitive science and the history of psychology. In addition, he has also co-authored books on both William James and phenomenological methods.

This is what war is really like...a must read.

This is an extraordinary book because it brings us back to those weeks just before America entered World War Two and lets us see the war through the eyes of a young guy who could’ve been any of us had we been there then.

Hank and Theo are as close as brothers can be, tied together by their love for baseball helped by their dad. They join the Navy and the Army Air Force weeks before we entered WW II.

But it’s Navy man Hank we follow aboard the doomed aircraft carrier Yorktown as it heads to the Pacific destined to help stop Japanese aggression and reverse the tide.

We hear first hand as Hank tells us what he experiences and what he feels as his new baseball partner turns out to be an African-American who has to serve as a waiter for the pilots and other officers.

Few books about war are as effective in suggesting what war is really like....a must read for all ages.

About the Author
Philip J. Pratt is Professor Emeritus of Mathematics and Computer Science at Grand Valley State University, where he taught for 33 years. His teaching interests include database management, systems analysis, complex analysis, and discrete mathematics. He has authored more than 75 textbooks and has co-authored three levels of Microsoft Office Access 2013 books for this popular Shelly Cashman Series and A Guide to SQL.

Mary Z. Last has taught computer information systems since 1984. She retired from the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor, Belton, Texas, where she was an Associate Professor and the Director of the Center for Effectiveness in Learning and Teaching. Ms. Last is actively involved in the Computing Educator's Oral History Project that encourages young women to pursue careers in math and science. She has been a contributing author to the Shelly Cashman Series since 1992. She also authors many instructor resources for database texts.

Seems good so far!

I picked up this class almost as an afterthought for my degree. However, now that I started working from this book I realized that there are some aspects of Access that I could easily see being used in my work place. I am currently using this to help create a better inventory system than what we currently use.

The layout of this book is very nice, and the way it steps you through the problems is very easy and informative. The nice thing is that once it shows you the basic steps to do something, subsequent steps just ask you to do it without showing the steps again....forcing you to remember how you did it. There is a ton of information in the margins of this book, and it really describes common issues you may encounter why working through it and explains what the possible error was.

I picked this up new when it was $35, compared to the current $100. So if you can find it for a good price, it makes it even better!!

Bought the book for a Database Management course. Book is as described. I'm only halfway through my course but the book shows a lot of screen shots and has detailed explanations on how to do different actions through Microsoft Access. There is a free link listed inside for the databases used and their corresponding files.

For 213 years, beginning around 1700, the "incorrigible pioneering" of merchant traders of the East India Company furthered the "peculiarly diffuse character" of the British Empire. British author Keay tells an ambitious story with sweep and brio, encompassing the company's origins as a "bane of bedraggled pioneers" in search of spices in the remote Indonesian archipelago; its role in the 1690 founding of Calcutta (an episode of "commercial greed and political mayhem"); and the opening up of China in 1700, which was to become the company's most profitable trade. Keay not only portays some of the adventurers and potentates who encountered one another but also grasps the details of trade, some more momentous than others: one missive from London to India mixed declarations of war with Spain and complaints about a bar bill. The company's monopoly charter was eventually broken not by rival traders but by British manufacturers wanting more overseas outlets for their products. Conventional wisdom has it that the commercial imperialism of the early English trading companies was intertwined with the political imperialism of the expanding British empire. In this reexamination of the English East India Company, Keay, an author and broadcaster specializing in Asian history, acknowledges that "but for the Company there would have been not only no British India but also no global British Empire." But he also shows that the triumph of imperialism helped bring about the downfall of the company by eliminating its monopolies and creating conditions for the 1857 Indian mutiny. Keay's title is intentionally ironic; he reports, "venal and disreputable, [the company's] servants were believed to have betrayed their race by begetting a half caste tribe of Anglo-Indians, and their nation by corrupt government and extortionate trade." From a British specialist in Asian affairs, this is comprehensive, fact-choked history of the Engish East India Company, which went to India to trade and founded an empire--the British Raj. Chosen as one of the three best books of the year in England by the Financial Times, it is a bold attempt to tell the action- packed story of a trading company that was founded in 1600 and continued in business until 1873; a company that, stretching from London to China, was once the world's largest trading power. Over the course of two centuries it behaved more like an independent principality as it made treaties, waged wars, and acquired territories. Created in London by ``men with long heads and deep purposes,'' it originally sought to gain for England a portion of the profitable spice trade, which had been hitherto controlled by the Spanish, Portuguese, and Dutch. There was also a secondary purpose--to find markets for Britain's wool cloth, an absurdist subtext to the more colorful trading ventures as the British merchants vainly tried to sell heavy fustian to tropical peoples. Beginning with the early days when these entrepreneurs were more buccaneers than legitimate traders, Keay goes on to describe the derring-do and occasional chicanery that led to the granting of trading rights; the great fortunes made in India by men such as Thomas Pitt, the great-grandfather of Prime Minister William Pitt; the founding of cities like Calcutta and Bombay; the regulations made in response to attacks by Edmund Burke, who claimed the company had broken every treaty it had ever made and sold every title it had ever dispensed; the opium sales that paid for the entire investment in tea; and the eventual takeover by the British government intent on creating an empire. Keay has written a colorful, swashbuckling saga filled with epic characters and ambitions as corporate history merges with world history. Great narrative history....but.

John Keay's work "The Honorable Company" is a tour de force of historical evidence charting the rise and fall of the British East India Company. "The Company" was intially chartered as another vehicle of English economic imperialism in the 17th century, competing for the riches of the East and Asia. The author painstakingly unfolds the events of its amazing rise to power and influence, and more importantly, how the BEIC gradually became the "unofficial" goverment of India after approximately 1650

The book jacket claims the author researched this subject for 30 years, and the level of scholarship confirms his efforts. However, the book lacks the precise focus of academic history that investigates the implications of the economic events and how they affected the political power struggle in Europe. Keay does not directly explain the theory, and practice of mercantilism, its origins in the 17th century and how it would become the half-way house for the evolution of 19th century capitalism. Many of the 17th and 18th century "merchant kings" financed the industries of later 19th century, shifting the emphasis away from trade and barter, to "industrialized" manufacturing for profit. Overall, this is an excellent study of the BEIC.

Worth reading ..

The most difficult part about writing the company biography is to classify which event or decision is the most important part in scripting the future. Keay's research in this aspect speaks for itself through out the book. A journey of 400 years scripted in a few hundred pages has been narrated with so much Intrigue that it is hard to leave the chapter unread. Travelling centuries with different characters, each contributing a significant part to history, yet showing there big picture of political, social influencers is a well done job. The book is I interesting for both information hunting historians as well as intrigue filled story teller.

Well told story of a relatively untold part of world history

Excellent as a history of the relationship between Britain and the East Indies, primarily focusing on India itself. Links the ups and downs as reflections of wider issues, such as the wars between the British, the French and Dutch, and on the (mostly unsuccessful) efforts Asians made to control the rapacious traders and ultimately colonists.

If you're not into the history of this part of the world, you probably won't like it.
