You Are The Most Important Person In The World
By Bassocantor
The purpose of THE GRAIN BRAIN WHOLE LIFE PLAN is to follow up on the author's prior best-seller, and show the reader how to put the doctor's ideas into practice. That is, this is a practical book--not so much a theory book as his prior book: "The main purpose of this book is to help you put my ideas into practice in the real world and to show you that living your best life is about much more than what you put in your mouth." Additionally, Dr. Perlmutter includes some updated information on more ways of "eating more fat and fiber, consuming fewer carbs and protein, evicting gluten forever, and catering to your intestinal flora."

Here's how the book is laid out: Part I of the book reviews, for those new to his program, the concepts: "Part I explains the what, why, and how of the program. I’ll detail the ground rules, present new data, and offer a 3-step framework that will help you execute my recommendations." Part II provides the details on how to use his program, and which foods to eat. Part III includes "final tips and reminders," plus snack suggestions, shopping lists, and also the 14-day meal plan with recipes.

To start, the doctor sets a backdrop to review WHY this plan is needed. Why do Americans need to change at all? The author explains the sad state of American health. In particular, a huge number of people suffer from some sort of mental illness: "The United States is among the ten wealthiest Western nations where death from brain disease, most commonly dementia, has skyrocketed over the past twenty years. . . 5.4 million people are living with Alzheimer’s disease, and that number is predicted to double by the year 2030!"

For those not familiar with the author's prior book explaining his plan, the doctor gives an overview of the diet. It's called a "ketogenic" diet, which means that 80 to 90 percent of calories from fat, and the rest from fibrous carbohydrates and high-quality protein. Instead of meals having a big protein-packed entree and small side dishes, this plan calls quite a drastic change. The main entre is mostly "fibrous, colorful, nutrient-dense whole fruits and vegetables that grow above ground, with protein as a side dish." Other key features of the plan are: low-carb, higher fat and fiber, avoidance of gluten and sugar, and lots of "the incredible egg."

Besides just diet, the author provides a lot of tips on exercise. I actually thought the exercise tips were just as good as the diet tips. The doctor cites studies showing huge reduction in Alzheimer's for those at high levels of exercise: "Those at the highest level of exercise activity experienced an incredible reduction of risk for Alzheimer’s of 50 percent when compared to those who were more sedentary." I thought the best exercise tip was this: "Establish An Exercise Routine You Can Sustain." Here's another interesting point. The doctor notes that the problem people have with exercise is not just starting it, but continuing it.

The latter part of the book contains "Final Reminders." For example, "Drink Water Throughout the Day," and "Find a Partner" who shares your goals. In terms of eating, the author reminds us to "Make Vegetables Your Centerpiece. . . . A full three-quarters of your plate should be filled with fibrous, colorful, nutrient-dense whole vegetables that grow above ground."

Since I love to eat sweets (especially chocolate!), I was pleasantly surprised to see lots of healthy snack ideas. He suggests snacks such as "a handful of raw nuts, olives, and/ or seeds (no peanuts), a few squares of dark chocolate (anything above 70 percent cacao) • chopped raw vegetables, or hard-boiled eggs.

I was especially happy to see protein bars on the list of snacks. From the author's recipe online, here are the secret ingredients for a recommended protein bar:
• 2C almonds – soaked overnight
• 2 tbsp. ground flax seeds
• 1/2C shredded coconut
• 1/2C nut butter or coconut butter
• 1/2 tsp. sea salt
• 1/2C pastured butter or coconut oil or a blend of the two (melted)
• 1 tsp. vanilla
• Stevia, to taste (optional)
• Cacao chips (chopped, optional)

Besides the snacks, I just had to try one of the desserts listed. So I made the dessert with ricotta cheese, berries, and sliced almonds. It's simple to make--even I was able to do it.

All in all, I found THE GRAIN BRAIN WHOLE LIFE PLAN to be a useful, and encouraging book. The book is easy to read and nicely laid out. From similar books, I was already aware of many of the doctor's ideas, but it was good to have them reinforced. There is a useful Bibliography at the end, containing helpful reference information; for example, links to the Alzheimer’s Association.

Gave me a lot to think about . . .
By CD
and I've read his first two books. A thoughtful progression from Grain Brain and Brain Maker, and built on the essential principals of these previous works. Others can comment about the nuts and bolts advice of diet, exercise, and sleep. I am contemplating how I need to adjust my life to handle stress better, on account of the revelation in this book of Dr. Perlmutter's personal health crisis, which landed him in the hospital. He shares what happened in his life that may have contributed to this event, and of the power of love and compassion to heal. The story is captivating, and profound. It made me think of my whole life plan - am I in a place where I can truly love and minister to others, and is there needless stress I must be rid of? Because our health depends on these things as well as diet, exercise, and proper sleep. Thanks, Dr. Perlmutter, for sharing more personally in the book, as well as for all the updated information! May the power of gratitude to you be evident in this review!

This Book is About Eating High Fat Low Carb
By Diana
Interesting that he is now promoting no grains at all. Previous books were mostly get off gluten.. I guess baby steps. This book is also about high fat low carb, which I've been trying to adapt to. Its very difficult for me because I love sugar. I am mostly off grains. I'm trying to step down slowly off all sugars. The recipes look good. Four stars because he left out the index in the Kindle version :-\ If you love indexes, then you won't like that about this book. I appreciate the exercise section as I enjoy exercise.

"Here is the 4th edition of the classic book on home birth that introduced a whole generation of women to the concept of natural childbirth. Also new is information about the safety of techniques routinely used in hospitals during and after birth, information on postpartum depression and maternal death, and recent statistics on births managed by The Farm Midwives.

From the amazing birthing tales to care of the newborn, Spiritual Midwifery is still one of the best books an expectant mother could own. Includes resources for doulas, childbirth educators, birth centers, and other organizations and alliances dedicated to improving maternity care at home and in hospitals. "

Positive perspective on birth!
By Pomegranate
As a first-time mom without any other pregnant friends, it is difficult to develop realistic expectations for birth -- particularly if you intend to have a "natural" birth in a hospital setting. I have received a huge range of unsolicited birth stories from well-intended friends and family, but most of them are either 1) funny or 2) scary anecdotes that don't help me prepare in any way to give birth. Although we can't control what people say to us in a grocery store line or at a family function, we can seek out stories (like this book) that will give us POSITIVE PERSPECTIVES on the birth process.

PROS:
- This book is really positive and life-affirming. Expecting moms and dads need all the emotional support we can get!
- The variety of birth scenarios and perspectives was fantastic. Lots of different parent personalities and labor/delivery approaches were reviewed in a non-judgmental style.
- Most of the "natural births" detailed in this book were in home environments, but could have easily been supervised by cooperative physicians and nurses. Ina May and the other midwives acknowledge the role medical professionals played in the few necessary interventions. They obviously have a good working relationship and rapport with nearby hospitals.
- It talks honestly about the complex emotions, sensations, apprehensions and relationships of the parents going through the birth process.
- While most of the stories are from mothers, some are also written by the fathers. As a person who is married to a strong, capable, loving man who plans to be my "birth partner" in labor and delivery, I was happy to see this perspective. Dads need to be educated and empowered, too!
- This is a text meant to enrich and empower your understanding of birth, not explain the medical/biological processes. We all need an escape from the clinical birth guides.

CONS:
- Starting with stories as far back as the 1970s, the lingo in the book was sometimes distracting ("feeling Holy", "telepathic", "psychadelic" etc.).
- Each story is 1-2 pages long, and many were written years (or decades) after the birth happened. This means some of the stories seem glossed over and a bit too easy to be realistic. I appreciate that the storytellers are doing their best to recount what was meaningful to them, but it seems like important factual details are missing from about 25% of the stories.

CONCLUSION (4.5 STARS):
- Great perspective on the emotions associated with birth.
- Empowering stories of mothers and fathers working together to bring their little ones into the world.
- I feel more mentally prepared and more confident as my due date approaches.

I love it. I found both of these books to ...
By Keri Athanas
After reading Ina May's other book, the guide to childbirth, I wanted to read this book as well for the more spiritual aspect. Both books cover a lot of the same material, but this one definitely fits the title with spiritual. It is amazingly hippie-tastic. I love it. I found both of these books to be very empowering and really take the fear and mystery out of birth. Our culture is so weird with its fear driven tactics of birth and quickly opting out of any pain, this book (as well as the other one) really demystify the fear and pain around childbirth and take it back to what it is: your body doing what it's been made to do.
Great birth stories, lots of spiritual wisdom, and a midwife guide in the back of the book which is helpful for the diagrams and preparing you for what types of things your midwife will be doing while you labor.
This book and her other one I think are musts for any woman looking to empower herself and have a natural birth. I would say to just stick with the guide to childbirth if you are looking for something more cut and dry, but I really did appreciate this book for how out there it was with its language and psychedelic talk.

Exceptional read for anyone preparing for childbirth
By Sarah M Bingham
I found this book and Ina May's "Guide to Childbirth" to be invaluable in my preparations for my first child. The reading is smooth and comforting and the stories are so varied, but all so empowering. I am certain that these two books are what gave me the strength and knowledge to have an entirely natural child birth (in a hospital, we couldn't afford a midwife in our area). Because of these stories, I was prepared for anything and I believed in my baby and body. I accepted the pain, kept breathing, and "rode the waves". Child birth was the hardest and most glorious experience of my life. I am so grateful to Ina May and the other women in these books for sharing their wisdom. I truly have love in my heart for them. No one in my family had much to share about birth, especially natural birth. It's just not something they talk about. If it hadn't been for these books I would have felt alone, scared, and possibly made decisions about birth that I wasn't comfortable with. These books made me feel welcome and safe in this beautiful part of life and gave me the power to have the type of birth I wanted for my son and myself. I can't express it enough. Don't bother with any other books on the topic, even if you want the epidural or other assistance, I'm positive this and the other book will help you. I would read, "A Guide to Childbirth" first and then this one. I think the other book is a bit more "universal" and it has a lot of good information about possible complications, ect. "Spiritual Midwifery" is as it sounds, a little more on the "hippie" spectrum, but absolutely pure gold. (yay! my first review! never been anything so important/worth it before) Good Luck Ladies!!! Your body was designed for this, embrace and love it!

Excellent read - meant to be read more than once!
By L. Kidd
This is actually the second copy of this book I have purchased. I gave a copy to a friend and later decided that I had to read it again. The principles work - but we, being creatures of habit, must use them over and over again as we learn the powerful changes they can produce to help us create the life of our dreams! Highly recommended... but this is not a "quick fix" book.

Amazing Results with proof to show it works
By WFin
I read this book in 1996. I was in a sorry state. I had left a good accounting job to start a new business venture which had gone wrong. I had no job, no income, my car was falling apart and no way to pay my mortgage. I had lost my confidence and was very depressed I was only 26 at the time. I read this book and it seemed to change my life beyond belief. Had I not physically listed out and dated the "list" of things that I wanted to achieve I would not have believed it. Below are detailed descriptions of some of my things achieved because of this book, it is long and detailed to show how it cannot be mere coincidence but as a result of my list.

I don't have this list anymore but I had listed about 10 or 11 things. At the bottom of the list were things like be famous and find a husband silly I know. These last two things I did not get that year. Everything else on my list I got. I had things like get a job, have 1500 in my bank account (this seemed impossible to someone in debt) get a specific car (Vauxhall Calibra Bright Red) I had a picture of it to focus on. A two bedroom house (yes I got it)I was living in a 1 bed apartment at the time). I applied all the things: affirmations, creative visualisation, imagine I own those things, got the job when I applied etc. They all seemed to fall in place. Very weird. Even when I went to look for my car. Couldn't find the car at the price. Was looking at something else and I mentioned to the dealer "well what I really wanted wassomething sporty like a red Vauxhall Calibra but they are too expensive" it seemed really cool at the time I was 26. Well the dealer said. Oh I have one of those round the back. Out rolled the red car exactly like in my picture within my price range. Couldn't believe it. I amended my list a couple of times that year. Once i got a job, I decided I wanted to double my salary within a year. This seemed impossible as people at the time only gave 1K or 2K payrises. It was a long time ago and I think I was earning 15K and I wanted to achieve 30K by the end of the year. Well somehow my double salary came i changed jobs and got my 30K salary. I even set my sights on a new car Honda Prelude in silver (sporty little car). Well I focused on it, went to the showrooms, sat in them, imagined I owned one, imagined it every night. The photo I had happened to be burgundy coloured honda prelude. I wanted silver. Well somehow I ended up getting a burgundy one exactly like the brochure photo I had. I guess staring at it and having the picture on my wall made me somehow get the burgundy though my own wish was silver.

I found it totally bizarre. My own friends did not believe me til I showed them the list I had written some 13 months before with the date and list of things and ticks by everything that I had achieved. To me it seems too many things to be just coincidence. I don't know how it happened. The book and other books like Napoleon Hill mention that you should not set limitations or try to think how you can achieve them, just believe that somehow they will come to you.

List out very specific desires, like pictures of things, descriptions of the job or house, I personally find houses hard to focus on without a physical picture or being in it. I later had on my list "get a job that involved travelling round the world and double my salary again 30K to 60K, company car, +extra perks that I wanted like company mobile phone and car and petrol card",(I just want to point out that I was only a part qualified accountant and have no degree and didn't go to University so it was very unrealistic and unachievable for me at the time). I visualised going to lots of countries. Well Accountants like me don't travel unless Auditors and I wasn't an auditor. So no chance as for the other things they were a dream to me. Well I ended up getting a job as an IT Consultant for a huge global company demonstrating accounting software for the salary and perks I wanted,(as I was not a technical person I somehow blagged my way into the job with the expectation that if I could do it then all the perks and double salary came after a couple of months) I had to just learn what I needed, hey I did it! I got to go to hundreds of countries, all over Europe (i live in UK),Finland, South Africa, Mauritius, Morrocco, Canada, USA were the further afield ones but all paid for by my company in lovely hotels, all my meals paid for etc. I ended up travelling so much I was exhausted and living out of hotel rooms but hey I got what I asked for and it was great and so different from my previous Accounting number crunching boring jobs which I hated. I even ticked off the confidence box as I learned how to do technical presentations of software and show it to auditoriums full of Directors, Accountants, Business People. Then I went on to do IT Training so again needs confidence and teach a load of Directors and Accountants how to use software.

I have not made this up it is bizarre and even my husband doesn't believe it was this book. I just know I did a long specific list and ticked off most of them as they happened even when I amended the list after I achieved things I ticked off some new things too, it also seems to work down the list so things at the bottom don't happen until the first ones are achieved. Things I wanted I just got.

I am 40 now and as I got older my priorities changed and my list was not career related but to get a loving kind husband, children etc. I have those things. I am tempted to start a new list now I have remembered all these things. So I guess life is what you want it to be if you believe it, visualise it and LIST IT SPECIFICALLY IN DETAIL. Try it experiment on just one small thing to start with get a picture of it and give it a go then once you get it make a long list of things and date it and BEGIN your journey get a newspaper dated and take a photo of it with your list just so you can prove to yourself and others later that it really worked.

Two young women from totally different backgrounds are thrown together during World War II: one a working-class girl from Manchester, the other a Scottish aristocrat, one a pilot, the other a wireless operator. Yet whenever their paths cross, they complement each other perfectly and before long become devoted friends. But then a vital mission goes wrong, and one of the friends has to bail out of a faulty plane over France. She is captured by the Gestapo and becomes a prisoner of war. One of the most powerful books I've read
By Gretchen @ My Life is a Notebook
This review is of an ARC received from NetGalley.

There are few books that leave me speechless.

This would be one of them.

I'll admit, I had my reservations in the beginning. The narrator RAMBLES like whoa. I mean, I was reading on a screen and I saw pages taken up by just two paragraphs and I thought "Swell, this is just going and going and I'm going to be bored to tears."

I wasn't. Not by a long shot.

Usually, if the narrator rambles, I get bored and lose interest. Not here. Sometimes I feel like narrators in YA lack a distinct voice, but-again-not here. Verity HAS VOICE. Verity HAS PRESENCE. Despite the fact that she tells her story from Maddie's point of view, talking about herself in the first person, I felt like I was seeing into Verity's soul. There was no doubt in my mind about the voice that was just flying off the pages, talking to my heart. She not only managed to win me over despite rambling, but also despite talking about herself in the third person, which is huge. (The third person thing makes sense later, but I can't say anything about that!)

Plus, I was expecting a pretty dark, dramatic book. It is both of those things, but imagine my surprise when I found myself laughing out loud multiple times while I was reading. While Verity is being held by the Gestapo. I was laughing. That's how spectacular Verity is. That's how strong she is. That's what this book is like.

I'd also like to give a brief shout out on a very touchy subject. Not only is Verity a rounded person, but the German Officer who interrogates her is also a rounded character. He isn't this mindless drone, which I found very refreshing and made the book even more real. It would have been so, so easy to stereotype this guy, but Wein didn't. She MADE IT REAL.

You have no idea how hard it is not to comment on the second half of the book. I literally don't know how to write about that. I'll admit, personally here I found the voice weaker and several things too rushed, but at the same time I can't imagine certain events having differently, not if they still wanted to be real. The ending is very bittersweet, so I suppose my mixed feelings are supposed to be there.

And trust me, all of my feelings are there.

I could get technical. I could. I could talk for ages about the rambling, the technicalities, and the story tangents that don't make sense til the second half of the book. With any other book, I would. But with this one, I just can't. Code Name Verity was just one of those books.

A good book is fun to read. A good book takes you to a new place for a time, but then you put it down and you go on with your life. Code Name Verity was not a good book.

Code Name Verity was a great book.

It was the kind of book with images, words and ideas that get under your skin. The kind of story that melts into your heart. It was an experience that is with you long after you've closed the book. THAT is the kind of story that comes with Code Name Verity.

Kept me turning the pages
By Sabrina
A story of friendship set in WWII between a female pilot and a female spy. It's told in such a gripping way that each page pulled me along despite the backdrop and circumstance. The story is full of twists and turns, and while bad things happened in the book, I didn't feel like it was told in a gratuitous manner. Meaning, it did not linger over every gruesome detail, but managed to weave a compelling story. The torture and tough subject matter was handled very well. The gravity of the situation and all the emotions that went along with it still came across without being graphic.

There was one issue that jerked me out of the narrative. I'll refrain from mentioning it because it's a major spoiler, but seems like 12 resistance fighters with guns could take out three German soldiers. In the end, despite that scene, it was such a page turner, that I couldn't bump it down to four stars.

And I appreciated that Maddie and Verity were so true to life. They felt like real people.

Decades ago, fiction was littered with these larger than life male protagonists who always rescued themselves and saved the damsel in distress (who were utterly useless). They didn't cry, they grunted away injuries, and were basically testosterone fueled killing machines who never needed any help. Years later, I've noticed the reverse happen. Now it's the female protagonists who have slipped into that same role. I am so sick of books with the 'tough' female protagonist who is an expert fighter (or my favorite: the most feared assassin in the world at the wise old age of 17), survivalist, saves every male character in the book, and never, ever cries. What's worse...she feels the need to say (at some point in the book) "I don't need help from a man." And proceed to point out how she just did whatever she did better than a man.

Basically, these 'tough' female protagonists are cardboard cutouts of their male counterparts, minus the plumbing, and more obnoxious because the narrative tends to make a point out of inserting some 'tough female' speech, or has the protagonist punching a man to show him whose in command. It annoys me to no end.

Why can't individuals have strengths and weakness and everyone help each other out (no matter the gender) without giant, Rambo-sized egos?

I thought Code Name Verity did an excellent job of this. Maddie had a knack for fixing things and flying, and yet, she had real fears and insecurities, and cried after every harrowing event. She felt so real. The 'tough' female stereotype sneers at crying or any sign of soft emotion. As the daughter of a war veteran, I know first hand that those who are going through, or who have been through hell are some of the most emotional people I know. Tears and empathy are a sign of strength and courage; not weakness.

"I am a coward" and her story begins.
By She who must be writing
Oh god my heart. This is a wonderful piece of writing, but expect your soul to be ripped to pieces by the end. I shall try not to give too much information, because there are clues and facts and themes running through this, but just be aware that you're reading a story inside a story about a story. I want to say so much more, but even saying that may be too much.

A Dictionary of Albanian Religion, Mythology, and Folk Culture, by Robert Elsie

In some senses, Albania is a living museum of the past. Originally a small herding community in the most inaccessible reaches of the Balkans, the presence of Albanians in southeastern Europe has been documented for over a thousand years.

Albanian traditional folk culture, which evolved over centuries of relative isolation, is surprisingly rich. Yet despite recent events this culture remains little known to the Western world. Due to the lasting effects of a half century of Stalinist dictatorship, very few individuals even in Albania know much about their own popular traditions.

The Dictionary of Albanian Religion, Mythology, and Folk Culture makes available for the first time a wealth of knowledge about Albanian popular belief and folk customs. Alphabetical entries shed light on blood feuding, figures of Albanian mythology, religious beliefs, communities, and sects, calendar feasts and rituals, and popular superstitions, as well as birth, marriage, and funeral customs, and sexual mores. This unique volume will stand as the standard reference work on the subject for years to come.

A drink of water in a parched landscape
By BH
This is a phenomenal resource. It is the first attempt, that I know of at least, to try and catalogue the mythology of a culture that at worst was a contemporary of the ancient Greeks. I'll be honest and say that I'm biased in regards to anything Albanian (I'm from Kosova) but I got a huge kick out of this. I flipped through with my mother and was able to find entries for monsters and tales she had told me while I was growing up codified by genuine certified academic types!
Much if not most Albanian folklore is handed down via an oral tradition that extends back to before Christ. It is a beautiful thing but being oral it dies if no one remembers it, that is exactly what I am afraid is going to happen. As someone who has been to the region many, many times I think it imperative that the knowledge of the oldest generations be recorded before they pass on. If not then all you'll be left with is people like myself, who have but a pale echo of that tradition of myth and legend.
The only downside to this fantastic book is that it is so very limited. It is obvious that material exists for a much more in depth examination of this amazing trove. Some doctoral candidates out there have enough raw materials for 100 theses. Get hopping!
