Fiona Cownie, Professor of Law, University of Keele,Anthony Bradney, Professor of Law, University of Keele,Mandy Burton, Professor of Socio-Legal Studies, University of Leicester

Fiona Cownie is Professor of Law at the University of Keele. She was formerly HK Bevan Professor of Law at the University of Hull. A former Vice-Chair of the Socio-Legal Studies Association, and Past President of the European Law Faculties Association, she is an expert in legal eduction, and is well known for her work in socio-legal studies. She is currently President of the Society of Legal Scholars.

Anthony Bradney is Professor of Law at the University of Keele. He was formerly Professor of Law at the University of Sheffield and the University of Leicester. He was Vice-Chair of the Socio-Legal Studies Association, Executive Committee member of the Society of Legal Scholars, and is editor of the Web Journal of Current Legal Issues. Bradney has published widely in the areas of law and religion, law and popular culture, legal pluralism, and legal education.

Mandy Burton is Lecturer in Law at the University of Leicester. She specialises in criminal justice and family law. She has completed numerous empirical socio-legal studies, including projects commissioned by the Crown Prosecution Service, Department for Constitutional Affairs, the Home Office and The Legal Services Commission.

About the Author
Beverly Kracher, Ph.D. is a native Nebraskan and farmer's daughter. She earned a Ph.D. in philosophy at UNL. Beverly is the Robert B. Dougherty Endowed Chair in Business Ethics & Society at Creighton University's College of Business. She has been a professor at Creighton University for 20 years. She does business ethics consulting with local and national firms. Her articles can be found in academic journals and business magazines. Beverly was a research fellow at the Center for International Business Ethics in Beijing, China in 2007 and has returned to China almost every year since then. Beverly's business experience is a vice-president of an Omaha-based small business. Since 2008, she has also been executive director and president of the Business Ethics Alliance (businessethicsalliance.org), a nonprofit that leads in developing a climate of ethical excellence in the Omaha business community and serves as a beacon for other business communities around the nation and the world. Through the Business Ethics Alliance, she has co-written a series of practical organizational ethics workbooks. Beverly hikes, jogs, reads and goes to baseball games with Jerry.
Jerry Stegeman is a native Nebraskan from Scottsbluff. He earned a BA in philosophy at UNL. He founded and has been CEO of Plant Pros of Omaha, Inc., an Omaha-based interior plantscaping firm, since 1996. An associated benefit of the business has been as a laboratory for understanding and using ethics in the workplace. Jerry likes hiking, music, and loves baseball.

Practical Tool for Ethical Conversations

The Ethinary is a practical tool, intentionally accessible. The disgruntled previous reviewer, Caldwell, unfortunately misses the point. The beauty is in the simplicity. While the authors have expertise and experience in the most theoretical of ethical thinking, writing and interacting, the purpose of The Ethinary [an ethics dictionary] is to spark everyday ethical conversation.

I'm familiar with executives who leave the book on end tables in their lobbies for guests to thumb through, and others who select one ethical term to discuss at regular staff meetings. If you're looking for a tool to facilitate practical thinking and interacting at a higher ethical level, this is one that works from the executive suite to the manufacturing plant floor.

Not Worth The Money

Did a 2nd Grade student write this book? Seriously, I don't know how a person with a Ph.D. and another one with a B.A. could put their names on this drivel. I guess the reason they have these degrees is because they learned how to bilk people out of a lot of money.

Don't waste your money on this garbage. My company Ethics Committee spent thousands of dollars to get everybody their own copy. What an incredible waste of money. Of course, my company is in Nebraska and the writers of the book are also from Nebraska. Coincidence? I don't think so.

About the Author
S. Unnikrishna Pillai is a Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Polytechnic Institute of NYU in Brooklyn, New York. His research interests include radar signal processing, blind identification, spectrum estimation, data recovery and wavform diversity. Dr. Pillai is the author of Array Signal Processign and co-author of Spectrum Estimation and system Identification, Prof. Papoulis' Probability, Random Variables and Stochastic processes (Fourth edition), and Space Based Radar - Theory & Applications.

Found no substitute for a difficult subject

When readers and students ask to me for a useable book for nonmathematicians to get into probability (or a probabilistic approach to statistics), before embarking into deeper problems, I suggest this book by the Late A. Papoulis. I even recommend it to mathematicians as their training often tends to make them spend too much time on limit theorems and very little on the actual "plumbing".
The treatment has no measure theory, cuts to the chase, and can be used as a desk reference. If you want measure theory, go spend some time reading Billingsley. A deep understanding of measure theory is not necessary for scientific and engineering applications; it is not necessary for those who do not want to work on theorems and technical proofs.
I've notice a few complaints in the comments section by people who felt frustrated by the treatment: do not pay attention to them. Ignore them. It the subject itself that is difficult, not this book. The book, in fact, is admirable and comprehensive given the current state of the art.
I am using this book as a benchmark while writing my own, but more advanced, textbook (on errors in use of statistical models). Anything derived and presented in Papoulis, I can skip. And when students ask me what they need as pre-requisite to attend my class or read my book, my answer is: Papoulis if you are a scientist, Varadhan if you are more abstract.

Good book with the help of a good instructor

After reading almost all reviews, I actually think I agree with almost all including the ones that say it is not a book for beginners and ones that say that it is a great book written by a very knowledgeable author. As a student who just completed a course in this subject with this book as the text, here is what I would like to say:
1. My instructor re-ordered some of the content of the text for his course. It seemed necessary to understand certain concepts.
2. As one of the previous reviews mentioned, some of the important aspects of probability theory were hidden in problems, these were brought out by the instructor either as homeworks or as part of lecture notes and explained. This also means that it is not enough to just read this text and understand the examples. It is almost as important to go through the problems to get the complete picture
3. All in all I liked the book but I sure would not have liked it as much if I did not have a good instructor to go with it. Definitely not a self-study book.

Horrible is being too kind

I was forced to use this book for a course during my first year in Graduate School for Computer Engineering. I must say that this book is among the worst, if not the worst, I've encounterd. Concepts are never explained with any great degree of clarity: the authors' writing style is convoluted almost to the point of being indecipherable, new concepts are introduced with only minimal effort given to explaining their foundation and usefulness, and, conversely, concepts are proved using formulas/theorems that haven't yet been presented. If I hadn't previously taken a course using the excellent book "Probability and Statistics for Engineering and the Sciences" by Jay Devore, I wouldv'e been at a complete loss trying to understand the topics in this book.
If there is no way that you can avoid using this book, and if acquiring a well-written, logically-organized companion textbook like the one I mentioned above isn't feasible, then at a minimum I recommend buying "Schaum's Outline of Probability, Random Variables, and Random Processes" -- it at least clearly presents the concepts. By the way, the price of this book is completely unjustifiable -- it's blatant robbery.

Venki Krishnamoorthy is a functional consultant who delivers end-to-end SuccessFactors-based cloud HCM solutions across all deployment models. Venki has done over 18 full lifecycle implementations of SAP, Employee Central, SuccessFactors Recruiting, SuccessFactors Onboarding, Performance and Goal Management, SuccessFactors Learning, SuccessFactors Succession and Development, and Nakisa for customers in the US and across the globe. Venki is an author of four SAP PRESS books and has been a speaker for SAP Insider, ASUG conferences, and SuccessFactors-facilitated online webinars.

Donna Leong-Cohen, managing director at Coeus Consulting, works closely with SAP Labs to co-develop the RDS and best practices for SuccessFactors integration/migration packages. Prior to founding Coeus, Donna worked for several years with Deloitte Consulting in their Human Capital Division. Donna has over 16 years of experience in implementing HCM global systems and business consulting specializing in HR business process transformation. She has delivered over 30+ HCM implementation projects for a broad spectrum of global and domestic clients. Her wealth of experience in the HR systems industry has augmented her ability to work with complex global organizations and across many business sectors. Donna has worked in SAP HCM for 12 years and on SuccessFactors implementations for three years. She has considerable expertise in SAP and SuccessFactors integrations and has worked very closely with SAP s rapid-deployment solutions teams to develop package solutions, as well as with customers delivering complete end-to-end solutions for on-premise and cloud HR solutions. In addition, Donna has also worked to develop the curriculum for the SAP Talent Hybrid integration course with SAP Education.

Prashanth Padmanabhan is a senior director of HCM product management at SAP and an SAP Mentor. Prior to January 2010, he was the global product manager for SAP Enterprise Learning, SAP's Learning Management System (LMS). In that role, he was responsible for product strategy, design, roll out, and road mapping, leading a team out of the US, Germany, and India. In addition to this book, Prashanth coauthored SAP Enterprise Learning (SAP PRESS, 2009) and a self-published title, Look and Flow (Amazon, 2012).

Chinni Reddygari leads the SuccessFactors team responsible for custom integration roadmap and templates. Chinni began working as an SAP consultant, later becoming the practice director of SuccessFactors Global Cloud Integration and Extension Services practice. Chinni's focus is in enterprise cloud services, an area he is excited to be a part of given the opportunities and challenges that lay ahead. Apart from his success in practice management, he regularly helps with pre-sales activities related to SuccessFactors integrations.

Vishnu Kandi currently heads the SuccessFactors HCM cloud integration practice and has been part of several integration implementations at SAP. He has an extensive background in enterprise-class software development, implementation, and management, and over 12 years of experience in integrations, client-server and web-based technologies. He has experience in managing development teams, as well as architecting, developing, and deploying highly scalable and available systems, acquired while working on global enterprise implementations for large and multi-national companies. Prior to joining SAP in 2005, he worked in product engineering at Itreya Technologies on WorkflowDirect and eCommunix products.

I received this book free from SAP PRESS as part of their book review program. I was not required to write a positive review, and the opinions I’ve expressed are my own.
I got this book at exactly the right time. It helped me to understand not only the main stream SAP options for integration, but also some approaches off the beaten track.
So, here's some detail:
- I like the structure and the chosen scope. Before the book jumps into the technical nitty gritty to help you with implementation, it explains the available architecture and SAP's strategy thus maximising the chance that you pick the best option for your context to implement.
- The standard SAP - SuccesFactors integration scenarios are all explained very well on a business architecture as well as technical level: Talent Hybrid, Core Hybrid, Side-by-Side, Full Cloud
- Direct API access is also explained
- The value of rapid deployment solutions is discussed
- Many sources stop here, but this book looks intensely at 3rd party integration as well
- rounded off by a look at data migration via OData or web services

I find it's definitely worth reading for anybody working in integration either on the technical or the design side. i would also recommend it to project managers: even, if they don't need to read every detail it can give them an idea for the critical points and what to watch out for, because integration is where projects can fail easiest.

Cloud solutions change very quickly, so not all the latest changes are found in this book. However, it will save you hours of searching and many dead ends. The book will give you a solid foundation and once you've understood that, it is easy to find the few relevant updates in the communities.If you start from scratch, you'll waste a lot of time to build such a solid foundation first.

More mystery, miracles and Masonic mayhem abounds in Transylvanian Moonrise, the sequel to Radu Cinamar's Transylvanian Sunrise published by Skybooks.

Whether one is in disbelief that these events can actually happen, one only has to ponder the recent proven archeological discoveries of numerous underground chambers and unusual pyramidal structures and healing underground lakes in the remote areas of Bosnia and Bulgaria of late.

If you suspend your belief for just a while, you will open your mind to a far more truer reality than what we have been offered in this day and age - perhaps our actual heritage as a species will be recovered & reclaimed if one explores further the truths offered in this tale.

The alchemical references are quite intriguing as well as an interesting embrace of new spiritual paths. If one could live many years thanks to an Elixir of Youth, think what advances one brilliant person could contribute to our human race?

The adventures are too numerous to recount here, but will leave you wanting to learn more about the adventures of Radu, Cezar and their quest for humanity's true lineage and spiritual heritage.

Although the story ends rather abruptly, it is still a very good read and great sequel to the first book. Can't wait to read the third book in the series! If you like to challenge what you've been taught to not believe, then these are the books for you.
