About the Author
Dr Benjamin Spock M.D., practised paediatrics in New York City from 1933 to 1947. He then became a medical teacher and researcher at the Mayo Clinic, the University of Pittsburgh, and Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland. The author of eleven books, he was a political activist for causes that vitally affect children: disarmament, day care, schooling, housing, and medical care for all. He had two sons, a stepdaughter, and four grandchildren. Dr. Spock, who died March 15, 1998, at age ninety-four, was married to Mary Morgan who survives him. Dr. Spock's Baby and Child Care has been translated into thirty-nine languages and has sold fifty million copies worldwide since its first publication in 1946. Dr. Robert Needlman grew up in Chicago, and earned his MD from Yale Medical School. He trained in General Paediatrics and Developmental and Behavioral Pediatrics at Boston City Hospital, where he led the development of Reach Out and Read, a project to promote reading aloud. In addition to being the revising co-author of Dr. Spock's Baby and Child Care, 8th and 9th editions, he is the author of Dr. Spock's Baby Basics and writes for Drspock.com. First of all, great book. Been writing professionally for 20 years, and I still use this book occasionally.

WARNING on REVIEWS: Amazon is using the same customer reviews for "The Elements of Style, Fourth Edition" by Strunk and White (1999) and "The Elements of Style - the Original Edition" by Strunk (without White) (1920), re-published September 2007.

Since the republication of Strunk's original work was released in September 2007, all reviews before that date pertain to "Strunk & White." Any review after that date, unless clearly indicated, could pertain to either book.

The books are markedly different, but Amazon is using the same customer reviews for both.

Essential Writer's Tool.

When I write a book I use only a handful of reference tools: dictionary, thesaurus, Gregg's Reference Handbook, Writers Market, and the Elements of Style. Strunk and White is a wonderfully-written, extraordinarily concise tool that pays homage to classic high-end English. It takes language insight to make this prediction in 1979: "By the time this paragraph makes print, uptight... rap, dude, vibes, copout, and funky will be the words of yesteryear." The book begins with eleven "Elementary Rules of Usage," and then continues with eleven more "Elementary Rules of Composition," and eleven "Matters of Form." Each is presented as a brief statement followed by another sentence or two of explanation and a few clarifying examples. This amazing compilation fills only thirty-eight pages, yet covers ninety percent of good writing fundamentals. My favorite section is Chapter IV, a twenty-seven-page, alphabetical listing of commonly misused words and expressions. Here's a trade secret: when my manuscript is "done," I then turn to this chapter and use my word processor's Find function to study every instance of all these problematic words and phrases. I never fail to find errors this way. Many great writers are so only because they've learned to make use of the best available tools. The end of the book contains an essay on "An Approach to Style" with a list of twenty-one "Reminders." Those who fight the apparently-natural tendency to go against these recommendations succeed as writers. Those who don't, fail. It's that simple. The single drawback of The Elements of Style is that it's too concise; it does not stand alone as an all-encompassing tutorial or reference guide. Many readers will seek other sources for more in-depth explanation of style elements. About the Author
Jerome Schaufeld's wealth of experience in entrepreneurship, operations, and general management of technology-based companies ranges from his current role as Professor of Entrepreneurship at Worcester Polytechnic Institute to an assignment as a commercialization consultant at Children's Hospital in Boston. He served as Director of the RI Slater Fund, was President and CEO of Mass Ventures, and he has a "hands on" track record in several early-stage companies that ranges from functional to board-level advisory roles. He is a member of the Launch Pad Angel Group in Wellesley and co-founder of the Cherrystone Angels in Rhode Island. In addition, Professor Schaufeld is an advisor to the Boynton Angel group, a charter member of the national Angel Capital Association (ACA), and a founder/ participant in the regional NE Angels ACA group. Professor Schaufeld was a founder and the first Chairman of the MIT Enterprise Forum. He also founded the Incus Group, which is a CEO-level business acquisition and resource organization. Professor Schaufeld was co-founder of Phoenix Controls Corporation. The company pioneered an approach to the control of air flow in critical laboratory and hospital environments and was successfully sold to a Fortune 500 company. With a graduate engineering degree, research experience at MIT, an MBA, professional engineer's license, and Professional Board Director's Certification, Professor Schaufeld has a distinguished technical and operations-savvy managerial career. His current interest and research is in the area of improving the probability of success in early stage, innovative, technology-based ventures.

A Great Read that Addresses the Complexity of the Commercialization Decision

There is an overwhelming amount of innovation emerging from R&D departments around the world. Should it be commercialized just because the internal team thinks it's an innovation? Not that my tech manufacturing clients want to hear it, but the answer is often "no." It's been a long time since "if you build it, they will come" has worked. Now there is a way to get across the complexity of the commercialization decision and develop a roadmap for a likelier path to success. Jerry Schaufeld's book provides the tools needed to make this decision, regardless of the size of your company or industry. For example, his "commercialization cycle" helps us understand both the internal and external challenges at each stage, whether you're pre-investment, early stage, or series A. Is this the right idea for us to pursue, given our strategic goals? Is this an opportunity who's time has come? Do we understand the competitive environment? Do we understand the economic, technical, operational, and legal issues and risks? How long will it take us to get to break-even? Key issues are addressed in strategic planning, financial analysis, market demand, and operations. This is a great book that I recommend to clients and students.

Adorable, adorable!

My daughter loves this book. I think just about any 3, 4 or 5 year old girl can relate to Zoe. She talks about where she lives on Sesame Street, things she likes to do (play tea party, cars, ride on Big Bird's shoulders and look at books), she talks about loving to wear bracelets.
But she does NOT like to be cootchie-cootchie-cooed. The expression on her face, as she's enduring a lady cootchie-cootchie-cooing her is just hilarious. She looks just like my daughtr does when SHE'S being patronized and doesn't like it.
Zoe does explain that Elmo likes it, so you can cootchi-cootchie-coo him all you want. (Then you see Elmo, offering up his chin for just such affection!)
This book is interactive - very ingenious. This is a playful book. Original and fun, bright illustrations and sturdy binding.
Highly recommended!
