"This follow-up to the best-selling KISS GOOD NIGHT will comfort little ones like a cozy blanket that’s tucked in just right." -- BOOKLIST (starred review)

In the little white house, Mrs. Bear is putting Sam to bed, when suddenly -- HCK HCK! coughs Sam. Mrs. Bear gets some syrup. But the syrup tastes bad, and there’s too much of it on a too-big spoon, and it’s too hard to swallow. What will make Sam feel better? Acclaimed picture-book creators Amy Hest and Anita Jeram revisit Sam and Mrs. Bear as they share a quiet moment of comfort that is enough to conquer the coldest night.

From Publishers Weekly
In this followup to the team's Kiss Good Night, bear cub Sam comes down with a cough "Hck, hck!" he hacks and is doted upon by his unflappable mother. If Sam can steel himself to take his cough medicine ("Tastes bad," he says, before his mother even pours out the syrup. "I don't have a cough"), then Mrs. Bear will reward his bravery by letting him stay up to watch the snowfall. "Sam leaned back on his mama's soft belly, and it wriggled while she talked," writes Hest after the deed is done. "The little fire glowed and the kitchen was warm." Jeram nestles tiny Sam into Mrs. Bear's voluminous girth (sweetly playing up the contrast in their sizes, as she did so effectively in the first book), while the thickly textured ocher walls of their snug home seem to stand guard against the frigid night. As in the earlier title, Hest's soothingly rhythmic and repetitive prose, Jeram's burnished-hued acrylics, and the unwavering affection between Sam and his mother conjure up the essence of familial warmth. Being sick may have its downside, but the author and illustrator emphasize the extra coddling and indulgences that come with feeling under the weather. Ages 2-6.

From School Library Journal
reSchool-Grade 2-When putting Sam to bed, Mrs. Bear hears him cough. She tries to give him medicine but he doesn't like the taste and there is too much of it. With the promise of waiting together for the snow to come, the cub finally takes the cough syrup. Mother and child go downstairs, have some tea, and cuddle up in a soft, cozy chair, where Mrs. Bear tells a story about a bear named Sam. As they sleep, the snow begins to fall, and the last page shows them building a snowbear. Jeram's soft, saturated acrylic illustrations extend Hest's quiet, gentle text. The bears are the focal point on every spread, and their household has lots of warm, subtle touches and curving lines that give the book a comfortable look. Two mice appear throughout; they, too, are part of this loving environment. A feel-good story to curl up with on a cold winter night.

From Booklist
*Starred Review* PreS. This follow-up to the best-selling Kiss Good Night (2001) will comfort little ones like a cozy blanket that's tucked in just right. It's another stormy, winter bedtime on Plum Street, and Sam begins to cough. Mrs. Bear plies him with syrup, but it tastes bad, and there's "too much syrup on a too-big spoon." Mrs. Bear tells Sam to be brave, and she promises that once he downs the medicine, they can wait together for the snow. Sam swallows the bitter syrup, and the bears make tea and snuggle together next to the fire for stories. Just as they doze off, the snow arrives. As in the first title, Hest's words and Jeram's pictures are a winning combination. The simple text's repetitive rhymes and lulling rhythms transform the language of a fussy preschooler who doesn't feel well into a mood of reassuring, snug warmth that is beautifully echoed in Jeram's paintings. The soft acrylics in deep red, gold, and green get the cozy details just right--the big purple chair; Sam's thick robe and slippers; the friendly mice warming themselves by the fire. Best of all is the irresistible tenderness in the bears' faces, figures, and small gestures. A quiet, shining story of things made better. Gillian Engberg

A joyful, feel-good book!
By A Customer
Little Sam Bear just can't fall asleep; the cough in his throat is keeping him awake. When the love and cuddling Mrs. Bear shares don't work, she knows Sam needs medicine. Not wanting to take the cough medicine, Sam tries everything to convince his mom that he does not need it. "I don't have a cough!" Sam cries. "Taste bad," he explains. It's only when Mrs. Bear explains to Sam that after taking the medicine, they can go downstairs and wait for snow. Excited and brave, Sam swallows the syrup. All warm from the hot tea and cuddling, Sam is fast asleep when if finally snows.
The short tale of a sick cub and his loving mama is a wonderful book for all young readers. The way in which the author describes the setting is very inviting. Sam's red blanket is cozy, and his mama's belly is soft and wiggly as they snuggle in the big, purple chair while it snows. The pleasant setting will make any reader feel warm inside. The illustrations support this warm feeling. The soft colors bring out the best in both Sam and Mama Bear. This is a joyful, feel-good book!

Delightful story for wintertime
By Wendy Bittel
This is the short tale of Sam who his mother has discovered has a cough. Sam's mama patiently negotiates getting Sam to take his bad tasting cough syrup from the too big spoon. Then they snuggle in and wait for the snow to come. This a great story to read to your kids quietly before snuggling into bed on a cold winter night.

Big, juicy story of "capital"...
By Jill Meyer
The title of British author John Lanchester new novel, "Capital", could actually refer to two different meanings of the word "capital". Since the book is set in London, the "capital" of England, the title has that meaning, and as much of the story takes place in the City of London, where many of the banks and financial firms are located, the word "capital" could mean "money". Lanchester has written a big, brawling book about both meanings of the word.

Set during those uneasy times of 2007 and 2008, when the world economy was spiraling downward, the novel has 10 or so main characters, and about 10 secondary ones. All are tied together through a street in south London called Pepys Road, which began as a street of townhouses for middle class Britons in the early 1900s. The houses on the street have joined thousands of others in large cities that have been gentrified "up" as newly wealthy people have claimed the area. At the novel's beginning, only one of the houses is still occupied by a surviving descendent of the first owners. She is an 82 year old widow, now dying of a brain tumor. Most of the houses - with the exception of the widow's - have gone through extensive renovations to make them truly homes for the "new rich". One of these houses is owned by a banker in the City, Roger Yount, his wife Arabella, and their two young sons. Arabella - one of the few caricatures in the book - is a spend-it-as-fast-as-he-can-make-it sort of gal. She has full time staff but still considers herself to be overworked as a wife-and-a-mother. Roger - a decent sort - is caught up in the financial rat-race in the City, knows he's living way beyond his means, and is expecting a really big bonus for Christmas, 2007. So big, in fact, that the reader knows that money ain't in the offin'.

Joining the Younts in the story are other residents of Pepys Road, including the Zimbabwian political refugee who is a parking enforcer in the area, the Pakistani family who operate the small grocery on the corner, the family of the old mother dying of the brain tumor, a Polish-immigrant builder, a young footballer from Africa and his father, and several people associated with them. The plot, centering around a campaign of hate directed at the street's residents, binds this diverse cast together, with first rate distinctions drawn between the characters. Following the lot of 20 or so people might not seem easy, but Lanchester draws his characters with a deft hand. "Capital" is a capital (another use of the word) read. It is a compulsively readable book and very satisfying. It's a big boy of a book, but well-worth every minute the reader spends on Pepys Road.

"Novelistic Social Realism"
By Cary B. Barad
This book is very reminiscent of Tom Wolfe's "novelistic social realism" at its best, with a myriad of disparate but interlocking characters developed in depth as they confront the vicissitudes of modern life in a large bustling city. Several laugh-at-loud moments, interspersed with moving episodes of sorrow, avarice, despair, cynicism, rampant materialism and heartfelt humanity. Contains many "Britishisms" that may be unfamilar but which can be readily interpreted by the context. All-in-all, a satisfying reading experience very worthy of your attention.

A Compelling, Humorous Portrait of Londoners Lives
By Neville Samuels
A residential street in London, Pepys Road, is the center of the universe in this diverse, humorous and empathetic novel by Londoner, John Lanchester.

The depth and breadth of characters make for an immersive reading experience.

Every other chapter switches from a wealthy City banker and his breadhead wife who seem to live beyond their means; to a Polish builder who takes pride in not being like a typical British builder and gets to do up a couple of Pepys Road properties. Then, there's the shadowy seeker of asylum who takes pride in handing out parking tickets, and the extended family from south Asia who own and operate the local store.

There are other real-world characters too, and Lanchester does a brilliant job of drawing us into their lives and experiences.

Set around the time of the impending global financial crisis in late 2008, Pepys Road and it's residents, nannies and building renovators aren't immune to London's imposing bureaucracy, soaring property prices, high cab fares and intimidating tube commutes. We also feel entangled in all the mess of doctors waiting rooms, egotistical lawyers and impossible insurance company executives, determined not to let you have your way, entirely.

And there's an undercurrent of menace in the streets. An unlikely criminal whose terrorizing the neighborhood with strange postcards and photographs of the owners properties. It gets bad enough that London's bobbies finally get involved doing interrogations and taking notes.

Capital is a fluid novel that never bores. Paced well, with frequent character and scene switches and with such depth, and with so much wit and humor, we can catch ourselves laughing out loud.

Whether you're a Londoner or not, Capital, is a worthy character-driven read.

The Ides of March: A Novel, by Thornton Wilder

Drawing on such unique sources as Thornton Wilder's unpublished letters, journals, and selections from the extensive annotations Wilder made years later in the margins of the book, Tappan Wilder's Afterword adds a special dimension to the reissue of this internationally acclaimed novel.

The Ides of March, first published in 1948, is a brilliant epistolary novel set in Julius Caesar's Rome. Thornton Wilder called it "a fantasia on certain events and persons of the last days of the Roman republic." Through vividly imagined letters and documents, Wilder brings to life a dramatic period of world history and one of history's most magnetic, elusive personalities.

In this inventive narrative, the Caesar of history becomes Caesar the human being. Wilder also resurrects the controversial figures surrounding Caesar -- Cleopatra, Catullus, Cicero, and others. All Rome comes crowding through these pages -- the Rome of villas and slums, beautiful women and brawling youths, spies and assassins.

About the Author

Thornton Wilder (1897-1975) was an accomplished novelist and playwright whose works, exploring the connection between the commonplace and cosmic dimensions of human experience, continue to be read and produced around the world. His Bridge of San Luis Rey, one of seven novels, won the Pulitzer Prize in 1928, as did two of his four full-length dramas, Our Town (1938) and The Skin of Our Teeth (1943). Wilder's The Matchmaker was adapted as the musical Hello, Dolly!. He also enjoyed enormous success with many other forms of the written and spoken word, among them teaching, acting, the opera, and films. (His screenplay for Hitchcock's Shadow of Doubt [1943] remains a classic psycho-thriller to this day.) Wilder's many honors include the Gold Medal for Fiction from the American Academy of Arts and Letters, the Presidential Medal of Freedom, and the National Book Committee's Medal for Literature.

Great Drama!!
By Greg Feirman
I really liked Thornton Wilder's "The Ides of March" because of it's drama and it's philosophical content. The first thing to note is the great structure of the book which makes it very dramatic. The book is structured into four separate parts and each parts leads up to a scene that is anticipated throughout the part. For part I, it is the dinner at Clodia and Clodius Pulcher's; for part II, it is the reception at Cleopatra's; for part III, it is the profanation of the mysteries of the goddess by clodia pulcher and her brother; and for part IV, it is Caesar's assasination. From the very start of each part, Wilder whets your appetite for how the climactic event is going to go and I was so anxious to find out what happened, which kept me turning the pages. The second thing I want to mention is the great amount of thought provoking philosophical content in this concise, 246 page novel. There is alot of reflection in Caesar's journal about the rational grounds for religion (a belief in God or the Gods), there is a passage on living one's life with the knowledge that one will die one day, and stuff about love and relationships. Also, there is alot of character analysis, analyzing Caesar's character, contrasting it to Cicero's and Junius Brutus's and others. The fact that Caesar and these others are these famous historical figures from ancient rome tinges it all with that feeling that one is gaining an education about the roots of Western Civilization, in touch with the classics. My favorite parts are probably the letters of Caesar to his friend Lucius Mamillius Turrinus because of the great philosophical content and also the letters at the end of each section where some other character will describe in a long letter what happened at the climactic event. I heartily recommend this book because of the great drama and philosophical content. I've read other books set in the ancient past, such as Mary Renault's "The Last of the Wine", set in ancient Greece during the Peloponessian War, but I like this one better because there is more drama, more excitement, as well as more philosophical content, more real wisdom about life. And it does all this in 246 pages compared to around 430 for Renault's book. Any fans of this book who have recommendations for me please e-mail me! Greg Feirman

Fascinating novel about Caesar
By Bomojaz
This excellent novel, Wilder's masterpiece, is set during the last 17 years in the life of Julius Caesar in Rome. In it he attempts to answer the following: "What sort of person was Caesar and why was he assassinated?" Told mainly through letters and documents of people who knew him, from the famous - Cleopatra, Catallus, Cicero, Brutus - to the lesser known - Cytheris, an actress; Turrinus, a friend; Cornelius Nepos, a political observer - and including such sources as Caesar's commonplace book and journal, broadsides, and various official memoranda, Wilder creates a brilliant picture of the man and the people who surround him. We learn of Caesar's great love for Rome, but his disdain for those who populate her. In a magnificent observation by his physician Sosthenes, he says, "Caesar does not love, nor does he inspire love. He diffuses an equable glow of ordered good will, a passionless energy that creates without fever, and which expands itself without self-examination or self-doubt....I could not love him and I never leave his presence without relief." Those few sentences speak volumes. We see in Caesar's own (private) letters how different the public figure (lofty, dictatorial, the great warrior) is from the private man (amused by human folly, lonely, sensitive to those who have been injured by life's cruelties). Yet the book is not just a history lesson, despite its appearance, but a moving novel that builds masterfully to a stunning climax on the Ides of March with his murder. The book is truly magnificent, filled with much insight into human motivation and observation. Definitely worth looking into.

Gripping treatment of the last year of Julius Caeser's life.
By A Customer
This is the perfect book for adolscents whom you want to interest in history. Told in the form of letters from some of Rome's most famous citizens, including Mark Antony, Cleopatra, Julius Caeser himself and Catullus, the poet, the book is divided into four parts, each of which starts earlier and ends later than the previous section. The letter format not only allows the characters to ruminate on the meaning of their lives--and some big issues as well, such as religion and destiny--but it also allows Wilder to show an event from multiple perspectives, a technique he uses well to deepen the complexity of events over the course of the book. Caeser may be the worst writer in the book. He is given to repeating phrases for lyrical effect in a way that can be a little cloying, but on the whole he is viewed a little admiringly to be fashionable in our revisionist times. Wilder's women are strong as usual, and the story is always gripping. It's amazing to me that this book is out of print.

Anna Karenina (Maude Translation, Unabridged and Annotated), by Leo Tolstoy

Widely considered a pinnacle in realist fiction, Tolstoy considered Anna Karenina his first real novel and Dostoevsky declared it to be "flawless as a work of art". His opinion was shared by Vladimir Nabokov, who especially admired "the flawless magic of Tolstoy's style", and by William Faulkner, who described the novel as "the best ever written". The novel is currently enjoying enormous popularity, as demonstrated by a recent poll of 125 contemporary authors by J. Peder Zane, published in 2007 in The Top Ten, which declared that Anna Karenina is the "greatest novel ever written".

Plot: A bachelor, Vronsky is willing to marry her if she would agree to leave her husband Karenin, a government official, but she is vulnerable to the pressures of Russian social norms, her own insecurities and Karenin's indecision. Although Vronsky eventually takes Anna to Europe where they can be together, they have trouble making friends. Back in Russia, she is shunned, becoming further isolated and anxious, while Vronsky pursues his social life. Despite Vronsky's reassurances she grows increasingly possessive and paranoid about his imagined infidelity.

About the Maude translation: the translation by Aylmer Maude (1858-1938) and Louise Shanks Maude (1855-1939) is highly considered by scholars. This unabridged and annotated translation from the original russian by Louise and Aylmer Maude was originally published in 1918. The Maudes are classical translators of Leo Tolstoy who worked directly with the author and gained his personal endorsement.

The Book of Gold the Magic & Spells of the Biblical Psalms, by David Rankine

Le Livre d'Or (The Book of Gold) is a unique 17th century French magical work comprising numerous amulets, charms, prayers, spells and sigils for working with the Biblical Book of the Psalms of King David. Written in a simple style akin to a medieval Book of Secrets combined with magical practices from the ancient world, Le Livre d'Or brings together practices which have their roots in major works from the Dead Sea Scrolls and the Cairo Genizah, to the Greek Magical Papyri and Sepher Shimmush Tehillim (Magical Use of the Psalms). Now translated into English for the first time, this exceptional text demonstrates the significance of the Psalms as a unifying and vital thread throughout the development of Western magic. From Sweden to Syria, Britain to the Baltic, the use of appropriate Psalms has spread as a significant part of popular folk and religious magic, and Le Livre d'Or is an inimitable example of the transmission of divine power through the written and spoken word. Le Livre d'Or was originally bound as part of Lansdowne MS 1202 with a 17th century French copy of the most important of grimoires, the Key of Solomon. The extensive commentary by David Rankine and Paul Harry Barron emphasises the place of the Psalms within the Grimoire tradition, detailing their extensive apotropaic, amuletic and coercive uses in works such as the Book of Abramelin, the Key of Solomon and the Goetia. The editors also illustrate how the magic of the Psalms has underlain and cross-fertilised numerous traditions over the last two thousand years, from Hellenic magicians, early Christians and Jews of the ancient world to practitioners of the medieval Grimoires and Renaissance Cunning-folk. Whether it was for benevolent or malefic results, Le Livre d'Or provided the appropriate Psalm verses and relevant techniques. This previously ignored work is an outstanding example of eminently practical magic which not only draws on such major works as the Heptameron and the Steganographia, but also many of the divine names found in the Kabbalah. From Saints to spirits, characters to Creeds, Le Livre d'Or shines forth as a significant and reclaimed chapter in the Western Esoteric Traditions.

A nice edition to the tradition of psalmic magic
By Mattphistopheles
The Book of Gold is truly a golden edition to the library of any magicians with an interest in Psalmic Magic or the Grimoire Traditions. This work is expertly translated and the commentary and appendices alone make it worth the price. Finally a work that catalogs the use of the Psalms throughout various manuscripts of the grimoire tradition in an easy to reference way!

This book will make a great supplement to the practices of a wide variety of magicians from ceremonialists to folk magicians. If you use the Psalms in your work, first you need to get a copy of Sepher Shimmush Tehillim (Magical Use of the Psalms), which is usually included in the The Sixth and Seventh Books of Moses, then you need to buy this book!

So why only three stars then? Because there are two problems with the book that I received. Firstly, and more likely to effect the average reader is the fact that many of the directions for working with the psalms will instruct you to read or write the Psalm out until a certain line of the Psalm.

For example for Psalm 12 it says "If you have fallen asleep in a desert, read this Psalm until 'ne quando dicat'".

Okay, so beyond the question of how someone who is sleeping is meant to read a psalm, basically they are giving you the line in the Psalm (in Latin)where you are meant to stop reading. This is excellent for those who have a working knowledge of Latin or an interlinear Bible at their fingertips and want to spend time cross referencing. However, for those who would like to use the psalms in English, this adds an annoying extra step of research to the process of doing the actual work. I'm all for doing research when it is called for, but I am assuming that David and Paul translated and edited this manuscript so that people could actually use it. Which begs the question, if you want to make it easily usable, which much the rest of it is, why not just translate the line into English as you have the rest of the manuscript? Or at least give the English translation in the commentary following the Psalm. Is that so much to ask?

The regularity with which translators and editors of various Grimoire manuscripts choose to include the Latin wording and conjurations without offering a translation has a tendency to quickly become annoying. Sorry, but we aren't all proficient in Latin and I really would appreciate avoiding the extra step of translating the parts that you have chosen not to illuminate us on. I'm not saying that the Latin should be omitted. I mean, hey, who doesn't love that oh so magical dead language? But at least include translations in the commentary. I'm not speaking just specifically of this author (who does this with some regularity) or this work, but in general. However, this work stands as an example of this type of an approach, which can be somewhat inconvenient at best or make the translator come across as linguistically elitist at worst.

My second issue with my copy of the work is that I have just received it and nearly every third page is either completely or partially unglued. I mean, pages are literally falling out of the book. I know that this isn't the fault of the author or publisher, but the printer. However, the physical quality of the book does play upon my review as well. I plan to exchange it an hope that the poor binding is a fluke. I have purchased other works from Avalonia in the past and not had this problem, so it is most likely a simple error.

That all said, I most certainly enjoy this work and give kudos to David Rankine and Paul Harry Barron for putting it together and translating (most of) it. I would recommend it to friends and students in the future. I'll just make sure to recommend that they procure an interlinear Douay-Rheims Bible while they're at it.

Wonderful addition to my library!
By Scarlet River
I found this book after reading a blog by one of the authors. It intrigued me, as I come from a Christian background, but have turned my back on it completely, whilst retaining an interest in the Bible and history of the tradition. To find a book like this filled with spells and charms which uses the Psalms from the Bible, from the 17th century and translated into excellent modern English was a wonderful gift. I have tried some of the spells myself now, with good results and will continue to experiment. A rare keeper for my shelves!

I recommend this to people interested in magic, regardless of the religious tradition you follow. Its great to find material like this which is historic, without all the airs and graces usually associated with these types of books. No nonsense, which is what I like about the authors.

Giving it 5 stars with no hesitation. The Latin noted by another reviewer was not an issue, even though I am not a big grimoire adherent, I could understand it and find that using the latin, which would have been Latin in the original copy, had better effects than using the equivalent in English. A simple online translator might help if you never did basic latin at school.
