One of contemporary weird fiction's newest authors of great significance.
By Jeffrey Thomas
Nicolay, one of contemporary weird fiction's newest authors of great significance, usually works in the novella length, and usually from the perspective of a male adult protagonist. With his story "The Bad Outer Space," however, from his superb debut collection ANA KAI TANGATA, he shows that he is equally adept working in a shorter form, and very convincing when telling a story from the innocent and narrow perspective of a child. "Do You Like to Look at Monsters?" again demonstrates this latter skill, and it's a skill not all authors can pull off: making a child's point of view feel authentic. This story is charming, a bit humorous, and increasingly eerie, literally culminating in an image of great creepiness. Nicolay is an author of clear intelligence, highly literary, impressively well-read, masterful at creating a sense of place, and frequently draws from his own experiences, which gives his work a sense of verisimilitude and lays a groundwork of normalcy that makes the weird elements all the more striking by contrast. He's definitely a writer with a career worth following, and this wonderful little story is a fine place to start for the uninitiated.

A classic Greek theme retold in shades of radioactive green
By Jody L Rose
At the time of this writing, Scott Nicolay's story "Do You Like to Look at Monsters?" is a finalist on the 2015 World Fantasy Awards Ballot for outstanding achievement in short fiction. Told through first person point of view via a young boy's journal, the tale starts out with a seemingly innocuous event in small town America, circa 1960, then steadily builds on nuanced horror by adding odd events that unfold during the boy's family reunions. The story is rendered all the more chilling for its innocent voice, which contrasts the scenes inside a toy viewfinder coupled with the strange activities in his grandparents' basement. You will think about this story long after you have finished reading it.

Unexpectedly Strange and Powerful
By Jake Marley
Short Fiction is best, to me at least, when it seems to come out of a place that is clearly a part of the author's psyche. With every click of the Viewmaster I was pulled deeper and deeper into this world. It was sweet, charming, and disarming.

A wonderful short story.
