Good read. But not very accessible. I would recommend reading works by Benedictine monk Bernard Orchard, if one has the initial interest in origins of the Gospels with particular leaning toward Matthaen priority and more apostolic foundation.
But regardless, Butler here presents one of the more convincing and credible defenses for Matthaen priority.

I recommend that designers add this book to their library. Visual communication is word and image combined, and this book examines the many variations of how the two can successfully cooperate with each other in a variety of circumstances (kind of like a marriage: give and take).

Compared to other Psychology books I have read, this was an easy-read. I used it as a supplement to PowerPoints and lectures and found that this actually helped me understand the material a lot better. It is very straight forward without being too wordy and technical like other books. They use examples, which is a plus when you need to know how a theory is applied. I would definitely recommend it to anyone taking Motivation and Emotion.

If you ever have to sell an idea, buy this book.

If you're of the idealistic bent that believes that the best ideas always win out, or that the products and services that companies and non-profits produce always represent the best they can possibly do, then this book is not for you. But get in touch, because I've got a bridge I'd like to sell you.

For the rest of us, those of us who at some point will have to convince someone else of the value of our ideas, this book is indispensible.

You'd never know that, though, by the marketing of this book. In particular, don't be misled by:

The title: this is not a book for professional advocates, that is, lawyers. It is designed for people who have ideas to share, and are trying to figure out how to get them implemented. Which is almost everyone but lawyers.

The publisher: the presumption may be that, coming from a university press, the book is going to be arcane, obscure, unreadable - you-name-it - but this book is exactly the opposite - clear, compelling, convincing.

For better or worse, I read a lot of business "best-sellers," and this book is far superior to most. Why? Unlike many, if not most business books, the advice in this book is:

Actionable. So many business books speak in vapid generalities (E.g., "the key to leadership is courage; to be a great leader, be courageous". Sounds great, less filling. Daly provides a near endless supply of very specific, very concrete advice for advocates, from where to sit at a meeting, to how to dress, to the kind of language to use, etc.

Research-based. A lot of Daly's advice is counter-intuitive (e.g., people may judge your competence less by what you actually say than by who you're seen hanging around with. But it is all rooted in the results of research by social psychologists, communication researchers, organization development specialists, etc.

Readable. Daly has the gift of great college professors: he wears his knowledge and expertise lightly. Despite the weighty wisdom on which it is based - the book has the depth and richness of a textbook - it reads more like a business best-seller.

Realistic and honest. Academics in the behavioral sciences are cashing in these days with business best sellers. And while often well-written and enthusiastic, these authors can't help having a little bit of academic arrogance creep in: isn't it amazing what we've discovered? And hey, do what we say and you'll become... successful, popular, rich, famous, [fill-in the blank]. Daly has none of that; over and over again he makes the limits and boundaries of suggested behaviors clear.

Two final notes. First, while Daly covers all the bases of advocacy, his heart and enthusiasm are clearer in some chapters than in others. That is, this book has so many insights and behavioral tips, that one could easily be overwhelmed trying to implement them all at the same time. The best way to use it is to focus on the two-three behaviors most likely to help you in particular in selling your idea, and thoroughly master them before moving on to the next one.

That said, if you are ever going to be in a situation where someone has to choose among ideas, including yours, this is a must have book. Because if you haven't read it, the odds are someone with a competing idea will have. And then, you might as well pack up and go home.

Anyone who wants to know the cause of current global conflicts, read this book. It is the first time I have been able to find the chronological and detailed story of the domination of poorer nations by CORE (rich) countries. The information is a must for teachers and instructors, and I plan to use it in my World Regional Geograp[hy Courses.

beautifully written summary and analysis of world events and actors

This is a clearly, beautifully written summary and analysis of world events and actors. Mainstream news reporting about Third World people and events seems crafted to promote the neoliberal, neoimperialist world view that misguides U.S. policies, with obvious racist overtones. We in the U.S. are given the impression, if we even think of the rest of the world at all, that it is over-full of culturally, even genetically inferior people with irrational beliefs and hatred of the U.S., who are prone to random acts of violence and guilty of all the worst of human behavior and therefore deserving of whatever misery is inflicted upon them. It is this racist refusal to recognize the truth and the vital contributions to humanity of various peoples, cultures and times, and the accompanying warped world view, based on lies and not reality, that are primary forces in bringing about the downfall of this unsustainable system of human organization.

Not a fan!

If I could give this book ZERO stars, I would. This book is awful to read! It feels incomplete like the author expects that you're learning the information from somewhere else and they are just there to refresh your memory. One of the End-Of-Chapter Questions in Chapter 6 began with: "The following matters were not addressed specifically in the text." Who writes a book to teach and puts a question like that in the End-Of-Chapter "refresher" questions?! I got more of a "frustrated" feeling than a "refreshed" one.

I took this course (Data Communications) in Spring 2015 and the instructor asked the students to comment on the course and book. Here are some of the comments that were written about the book:
"...poorly written and not a very good learning tool. How exactly are you supposed to learn when the author talks to you as if you already know the topic?"
"...my impression of the book was suboptimal."

A surprisingly fun textbook!

I had to purchase this book for a course in Network Security. I braced myself for a book that was extremely dull and technical. I could not have been more pleased to be proven wrong!

The authors insert humor and relatable material in the text. They also have "check your knowledge" questions at the end of each section within a chapter. This is great for someone like me who is new to the tech world and needs to make sure they are understanding the material.

Overall, I enjoyed it and this will be one textbook I am keeping!

The book follows the standard scheme of selling freely available information for an extremely high price because it is used as a textbook. If you have to have it, purchase a cheaper/used copy. Kindle version allows access only by 2 devices, which is very limiting (desktop + laptop + kindle tablet=3), and if you want to load the book on another device you have to deregister the device not just uninstall the book.

About the Author
Adrian Del Caro is Distinguished Professor of Humanities and Head of Modern Foreign Languages and Literatures at the University of Tennessee. He has published many books, including The Early Poetry of Paul Celan: In the Beginning Was the Word (1997) and Grounding the Nietzsche Rhetoric of Earth (2004). He has published numerous articles in journals including Journal of the History of Ideas, Philosophy and Literature, and German Studies Review. His translations include poetry for The German Mind of the Nineteenth Century (edited by Hermann Glaser, 1981) and The Gay Science (edited by Bernard Williams, Cambridge, 2001).

Christopher Janaway is Professor of Philosophy at the University of Southampton. His most recent books include Schopenhauer: A Very Short Introduction (2002) and Beyond Selflessness: Reading Nietzsche's Genealogy (2007). His most recently edited collections include The Cambridge Companion to Schopenhauer (Cambridge, 2000) and Better Consciousness: Schopenhauer's Philosophy of Value (co-edited with Alex Neill, 2009). He is General Editor of The Cambridge Edition of the Works of Schopenhauer series, for which he has translated The Two Fundamental Problems of Ethics (Cambridge, 2009) and co-translated three other volumes.

Cambridge University Press drops the ball on quality

Cambridge University Press dropped the ball on this volume. I have all the other volumes in this series in hardcover, and for some reason CUP decided to change the materials used in the series midstream. The materials used in this volume are lower in quality. The paper is not as heavy or of the same quality, and the cover material is also cheaper and not as nice (more like plastic than cloth). An easy way to realize this quality difference is to pick up the hardcopy version of the first Parerga volume (which has fewer pages than this second Parerga volume) and compare their weight. The first Parerga volume, which uses higher-quality materials, weighs more than this Parerga volume. CUP, nobody wants to pay this kind of money for cheap, shoddy materials. The use of such materials in this volume is made much worse by the fact that they differ from the materials used in the prior four volumes in the series. Now the books don't match properly. I would have been willing to pay more money to have gotten the same materials CUP used before. And publishers wonder why they are losing money?
