About the Author

David Wolber is a leader in App Inventor education and teaching beginners how to program their phones and tablets. His focus is empowering artists, designers, kids, women, men, humanity majors, business students—makers of all types—to add coding to their creative arsenals. His teaching materials, video screencasts, and course-in-a-box are available at appinventor.org, and his students have been chronicled in articles of the New York Times, San Francisco Chronicle, and Wired Magazine.

David is a professor at the University of San Francisco. He taught one of the first App Inventor courses in 2009 as part of a Google pilot and has been teaching and working with the App Inventor teaching community ever since. His teaching materials on the Google and MIT sites, and on appinventor.org, have provided the first introduction to coding for thousands of new app builders, and his course-in-a-box materials have served as a template for many App Inventor courses at the K-12 and university levels. David recently took a sabbatical at MIT to work with co-author Hal Abelson and contribute to the development of App Inventor 2. He also is contributing to the Mobile Computer Science Principles (mobile-csp.org) course for the new Advanced Placement (AP) course is US high schools.

Harold (Hal) Abelson, a professor of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at MIT, has a longstanding interest in using computation as a conceptual framework in teaching. He has played a key role in fostering MIT institutional educational technology initiativeI, and is a founding director of Creative Commons and Public Knowledge. Hal’s book, Turtle Geometry, written with Andrea diSessa in 1981, presented a computational approach to geometry that has been cited as "the first step in a revolutionary change in the entire teaching/learning process."

Ellen Spertus is an Associate Professor of Computer Science at Mills College, where she has taught with App Inventor, and a Senior Research Scientist at Google, where she was one of the App Inventor developers. She and her work have been written about in Wired, USA Today (which described her as "a geek with principles"), and in The New York Times (as one of three "women who might change the face of the computer industry"). In addition to her many technical publications, her writings have appeared in the book She's Such a Geek: Women Write about Science, Technology, and Other Nerdy Stuff and in the magazines Technology Review, Chronicle of Higher Education, Odyssey: Adventures in Science, and Glamour.

Liz Looney is a senior software engineer at Google, where she helped develop App Inventor and is a member of the Robotics Task Force. She has over 20 years of experience in creating programming tools and holds a bachelor's degree in Computer Science from The University of New Hampshire.

For Paper-Addicts ...
By Dr. E
Let's say you've never heard of the website (and, if you are reading this, I doubt that's the case ... but let's just say that). If this is the case, then the text provides easy-to-follow instructions from the simple to the sublime (want to add a sound? it's there. want to design a quiz? it's there. want to add animation. yep, it's there). Moreover, I love the additions of the "Test Your App" boxes and the "variations" entries (some of which may not always be so obvious ... pretty cool).

The book itself itself is published in color and the images are clear and ease to follow. Likewise, the text is concise and well-edited.

So, enough stalling ... yes, the only "downside" to this text is that most of this is available at the website. So, basically this is relegated to paper-addicts (hey, I bought the PostSecret and Awkward Family Photos books even though I know those websites inside-out).

Therefore, if you are crazy about physical books and need more information on creating (basic) apps ... this might be for you!

You may want to check out the App Inventor website and forums before buying the book
By Brian
The App Inventor 2 book explains how to use the App Inventor 2 website to develop an Android application. You'll go to the ai2.appinventor.mit.edu website to actually develop your app and then you will transfer it to your Android phone or tablet (Note that you have to have a google account to use the App Inventor website.) App Inventor 2 states that it supports Android 2.3 (Gingerbread) or higher, but there were postings in the forum which indicated that there may be problems with Android Kitkat (4.4) and Lollipop (5.0) versions.

You develop your app in the Designer and Blocks Editor on the App Inventor 2 website. During the development process you'll need to test your app. There are 3 options for testing: 1) Download the App Inventor Companion App to your Android device and then connect your computer to it by wi-fi. (Note: If you are using a desktop computer connected to the internet by a cable your desktop computer may not have wifi.) 2) You can install the Emulator on your computer to test your apps. For Windows and Linux you also need to install the aiStarter software and update it. or 3) You can connect your Android device by USB cable, which is not recommended for Windows because it is "tricky" due to driver issues. You have to scrounge up the appropriate drivers for your device(s).

Following the examples in the book is pretty easy for the most part. However people who have never written computer code and are not familiar with some programming concepts (such as variables, databases, events, etc) may feel a little challenged. Also there are some things which did not seem to be the most intuitive. For example, when you want to assign a numeric value to a variable, you don't just type in a number. The variable has an open socket and you have to go to the Math drawer and grab a number block.

I wanted to create an app to change the way notifications are displayed on the lock screen of my phone (Moto X). However after looking at App Inventor 2 and the forums I decided to just wait another month or two for the Lollipop update (which has better notifications).

A must have book.
By Amazon Customer
"App Inventor 2, Create your own Android Apps" has been written by those involved in the creation of this program. It caters for both new and experienced users alike and is a valuable reference.

The book is divided into two parts. The first 200 plus pages comprise a series of interesting projects which become progressively more complex. In doing so each important aspect of "App Inventor" is covered. Possible improvements are posed at the conclusion of each project. I recommend that you do these exercises.

The second section, "Inventor's Manual", explains the architecture behind" App Inventor". Each concept is illustrated with examples which range from simple to advanced. The advanced concepts included persistent data storage, animation, global positioning, and sensor interaction.

The book is well illustrated and all examples are clearly explained. In my opinion it is a must have book.
