About the Author
Peter J. Russell received his B.Sc. in Biology from the University of Sussex, U.K., in 1968 and his Ph.D. in Genetics from Cornell University in 1972. He then joined the Biology faculty of Reed College in 1972 where he is currently Professor of Biology. Russell teaches an upper-division genetics and molecular biology lecture/laboratory course, the genetics section of the introductory biology course, an advanced seminar course in molecular virology, and advises senior thesis research students. He is also the author of a number of successful biology and genetics textbooks, including iGenetics: A Molecular Approach.

He is currently studying the molecular genetics of gene expression of a plant pathogenic RNA virus, using the budding yeast, Saccharomyces cerevisiae, as the model host. The research goals are to define the genes of the host that encode products required for the expression of a specific gene involved in aphid transmission of the virus. His earlier research involved studies of ribosome biosynthesis and the organization of and regulation of the number of ribosomal RNA genes in Neurospora.

Great Introduction!
By Amazon Customer
This textbook offers a great introduction to genetics. It includes helpful diagrams and generally explains concepts well. My only complaint is that some of the end-of-chapter questions are very poorly written.

Good Genetics Book
By darkpyro26
This book, I have to say is the best genetic book I ever have. It's even better than the "Mendelian Approach" version. The Sol. Man. is also comes in handy with this book. I happen to still find this book handy in other classes, particularly biochemistry class, and DNA-Protein Class. It helps me write my reports and my M.S. Thesis as well.

Inconsistent writing and lots of typos
By Kasen Eilis Kipp
This book was assigned for the genetics class at my university, and was not at all helpful. The genetics class was for science majors, but was the basic class for those of us who hadn't taken one before. While some of the illustrations were helpful in explaining concepts, overall the book was more confusing than anything.
There were at least three typos per chapter, usually in a key explanation, and the writing alternated between language a kindergartener would find patronizing and passages only a practicing geneticist would understand, with almost nothing in between. The author belabors simple points and those already covered in biology for pages and pages and blows past more complex genetics-specific subjects in an irritatingly offhand few sentences.
The questions in the back of each chapter were useless. If the answers were provided there was no guarantee they had anything to do with the questions asked. Again, typos abounded in this section.
The reason this book got two stars instead of one was the illustrations. The graphs and figures really were helpful for someone like me who is a visual learner.
