Spend a few dollars more and get a better guide

This is a good guide for the beginner. It moves you through learning Access in a logical way. However, if you think you are going to read this book and be able to design a database that works, think again.

Creating a working relational database is not as easy as one might think. If you don't set up your tables and table relationship the right way, queries and forms will not work properly or will not work at all. Although the author discusses building table relationships, it's more about how to mechanically do it in Access rather than the theory behind it. Access has 2 relationship types and the author decides to only teach you how to set up ONE of them. Also, even though the author discusses multivalued fields, he decides that they shouldn't be used and doesn't bother to teach the user how to set one up. He recommends a junction table but never teaches you how to set one one up.

Access has a simple way to create a backup of your database, but for some reason, the author totally ignores this. He also recommends that you do this ridiculously long and complicated way of backing up just one table before making changes when backing up the whole database is much quicker.

As for form design, the author doesn't go into much detail about subforms. Subforms are great...when the work. But, if you didn't set up your relationships correctly (or your tables), subforms will not link properly and won't work. If you try to create a subform using the Forms Wizard and it doesn't work because your relationships are hosed, then what? You have to use the drag and drop method, which the author doesn't even mention.

This is as far as a got in the book. I decided it was better to send this back to the library and start over again with a better Access guide.

I would not recommend this book unless you already have extensive data base ...

If you have database building experience, this book might be helpful. I do not have experience (hence - the "for dummies"). I am computer literate, and do use the other MS programs. That knowledge does not help with database building. I find the program itself very complicate with all it's layers and different views. The book added to the complexity and left me very frustrated trying to comprehend exactly what it was instructing me to do. I would not recommend this book unless you already have extensive data base experience.

the brilliant result of thirty years of study

This book is superb, the brilliant result of thirty years of study. It is beautifully produced with over 200 color plates, all seen in person by the author. It also is easy reading. Even if you are not particularly interested in Qing Chinese art, you should buy this book for enjoyment. The reviewer feels it necessary to mention the he is the author's husband. He also wishes to point out that the review is completely unbiased.

Excellent review of Qing painting

Brown has done a superb job in presentation and analysis. Don't let the small size of this book deter you as it packs a lot within its covers. Every painter of consequence of the Qing dynasty is covered in these well-thought out essays supplemented by beautifully printed photos of the paintings. I am impressed by Brown's scholarship and her intimate knowledge of Chinese painting which will contribute to our deeper understanding of a lesser known facet of Chinese art. Bravo!

S Ramnarayan, PhD, is Clinical Professor of Business at the Indian School of Business (ISB), Hyderabad, India. A PhD in Organizational Behavior from the Case Western Reserve University, Cleveland, Ohio, USA, he has been a faculty member at the Tata Management Training Centre, Pune, India, for about 5 years and later a Professor at the Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad, India, for about 13 years. He has also been a visiting faculty at the Case Western Reserve University, Cleveland, Ohio, USA, and Guest Professor at the University of Bamberg, Germany.

He has worked in different sectors on a variety of assignments in the areas of organization development, change, and leadership. He has carried out assignments funded by different international agencies, such as US Office of Personnel Management, Ford Foundation, World Bank, Commonwealth Secretariat, Department for International Development, and German Science Foundation. Apart from research papers, monographs, and case studies, Ram has co-authored books such as Changing Tracks: Reinventing the Spirit of Indian Railways, Change Management: Altering Mindsets in a Global Context, and Managing Organizational Change, and has co-edited books such as Life After 360 Degree Feedback, Strategic Management of Public Enterprises in Developing Countries, Organization Development Interventions and Strategies, and Managerial Dilemmas: Cases in Organizational Behaviour.

T. V. Rao is currently the Chairman of T. V. Rao Learning Systems Pvt.�Ltd, Ahmedabad. He was a Professor at Indian Institute of Management�Ahmedabad (IIMA) between 1973 and 1994 and, subsequently, Adjunct/Visiting Professor until 2014. He is the Founder President of the National�HRD Network (NHRDN), and the First Honorary Director of the Academy�of HRD, India. He was also the President of the Indian Society for Applied�Behavioral Science (ISABS). Dr Rao has worked as an HRD Advisor to the�Reserve Bank of India, has assisted the Administrative Reforms Commission�in reviewing the personnel management practices for civil services, and has also�served as a member of the HRM Review Committee of Nationalised Banks�set up by the Ministry of Finance. Dr Rao has worked as a short-term consultant�to UNESCO, Ministry of Health, Indonesia; National Entrepreneurial�Development Association, Malaysia; and the Commonwealth Secretariat,�London. Dr Rao has over 50 books to his credit, of which 15 are authored�jointly with Dr Udai Pareek.

This is an enjoyable picture book by David A. Adler, wellknown author of the Cwn Jansen series and winner of the Sydney Taylor Book Award for The Number on My Grandfather's Arm. Illustrations are by Joan Halpern, familiar to marty readers from her work in the near classic The Carp in the Bathtub, by Barbara Cohen. The "secret recipe" is for latkes (potato pancakes), a traditional dish on Chanukah, and the hero pursues it in the typical inverted-logic fashion of the denizens of Chelm, a real center of Torah knowledge before the Holocaust and the source of many tales of Jewish humor. By the way, the book lets us know exactly what the recipe is-good cooking despite its destruction in actual use by the hero's wife. There is also a page on the origins of Chanukah, for those readers who don't already know. This book is fun. Like all stories of Chelm, readers of all ages see right through the protagonists' problem, though to inhabitants of Chehn the matter is as opaque and heavy as the failed latkes themselves. I recommend this tide for the general book trade, libraries, and the Jewish specialty shops. There's nothing to offend, and everything to recommend. -- From Independent Publisher

In this darling tale of Chelm, where the not-so-wise-men live, everyone has their recipes for Chanukah latkes.
Malke, the tailor's wife, guards her recipe with her life. "I may be a poor woman, but I make the best latkes in Chelm, and I'm the only one with the recipe," she says. As a young bride, she would let people taste them, but afraid that people could taste each of her ingredients, she closed her doors to all but her own.
In their memories, the Chelmites remember Malke's latkes tasting even better than they did. Finally, Berel the shoemaker could stand his wife's heavy latkes no longer. To ensure that he will again eat latkes that taste like clouds, he hides behind a tree outside Malke's kitchen until she starts cooking. He writes down everything she does.
Berel gives the paper to his wife. The recipe calls for 5 potatoes and 2 eggs. His wife Yentel says, "Some secret recipe."
"Scallions," he says. "Scallions," she screams. "Who ever heard of using scallions instead of onions!" She uses an onion, as always. Next Malke used flour, but Yentel uses bread crumbs like always. Malke used pepper, but Yentel objects to that too, and uses salt, as always. When the recipe calls for lemon and parsley, Yentel balks again, just as she does when the recipe calls for frying in vegetable oil.
"That's not a secret recipe, that's secret nonsense!" Malke protests. So, she fries in chicken fat, as always.
Needless to say, the latkes come out as heavy as ever. "They taste just like ours," Berel concludes. To which Yentel replies, "Well this just proves that no matter how you make them, latkes always taste the same."
When you have finished reading the story, you and your children can make the secret recipe, which is happily provided. Trust me, latkes DON'T always taste the same. But the fools of Chelm will never know. Alyssa A. Lappen

Adequate but Free elsewhere

I thoroughly enjoy Vachel Lindsay's poetry. The meter is reminisant of Edgar Allen Poe's verse. The subject matter is that of turn of the century (18th -19th) century. The mores and folkways of the United States were not the same as they are now. Lindsay gives you a cutting edge view of a mid-West American of that period.

There is no interactive Table of Contents. That means that you must trudge through the book from front to back or you must hunt-and-peck for pearls.

I frequently buy a book for a dollar on Amazon because it includes something like an interactive Table of Contents which the free version from other sources does not. This version on Amazon does not have anything that other independently produced versions have. Therefore I do not recommend paying money for it here. Currently this collection of poems is free on Amazon. By all means, get it here. If Amazon starts to charge for it, look a little further.

poetry for a lifetime

Vachel Lindsay's poetry has always evoked a memory of the first two decades of the twentieth century before WWI wrecked civilisation as it was then known. Imagine a poet who wrote poetry with the intention of it being set to music rather than just being read. Lindsay was a truly unique individual with an amazing talent that is under-appreciated. There is no finer poetry set to music than "Gen. William Booth Enters into Heaven, in the Charles Ives composition performed by the Gregg Smith Singers. My grandmother (b. 1900 once saw Lindsay perform, and I think it was the highlight of her life. She still recalled his performance clearly the summer before she died at age 92. The Gregg Smith LP of Ives' choral music which included "Booth" was the only LP she owned that wasn't by the Carter Family or Flatt & Scruggs. That's a high recommendation for Lindsay.
