Book Review
By abookfarm
This review is posted on my blog: [...] my writing seminar here at school, we had to read The God of Small Things by Arundhati Roy. This novel takes place in southern India and follows the life of the twins Esthappen and Rahel. It is 1969 and the Marxist Uprising is very prominent in the state of Kerala. Through a series of flashbacks and present day scenes, Roy creatively illustrates the unbecoming of their family through secrecy, loss of innocence, and tragedy.
This was one of the best books I have had to read for a class. It throws the twins into a situation they never dreamed of being in and shows how one person’s mistakes can affect an entire family. While reading, you slowly begin to see the children lose their innocence and trust in the good things that their world has to offer, which ultimately hardens their hearts.
The conclusion of this novel was very tragic and made me cry. When you learn who the “God of Small Things” is it makes you so happy but you also know what is going to happen and it is so upsetting. But once the twins are reunited as adults, they realize that there was always that special connection between them, even if it isn’t the connection you expect.
Roy’s work successfully shows the corruption of India’s current Love Laws and Caste System. She breaks down borders and builds her characters around these strict laws but allows them to step out of bounds. Through her social commentary, Roy thoroughly describes to the reader what needs to be changed in India. Roy is a fresh and strong voice that stands up against the laws of her land, showing others that change is necessary.

A Very Sad Story
By MDLION
The plot of the novel, taking place in Ayemenem (in real life Aymanam), India, is set up very quickly, in the first few pages. It's 1969 and almost 9-year-old Sophie Mol, cousin of 7-year-old fraternal twins Estha (male) and Rahel (female), has drowned. At her funeral, Estha, Rahel, and their mother Ammu, are shunned. At the police station after the funeral where Ammu has gone with her twins, Ammu is treated contemptuously by Inspector Thomas Mathew who calls her a "veshya" (prostitute). What has happened? Has foul play or something else resulted in the death of Sophie?

I bought the book because I was interested in its religious aspects. The book features Keralite Syrian Christians, Catholics and Hindus. The twins maternal great aunt, Baby Kochamann, converted to Catholicism at an early age and became a nun. She did this to get close to Father Mulligan, an Irish priest she is in love with. But this unrequited love sets her on long path of bitterness and scheming.

There are heavy themes throughout the book, sexual abuse being one of them. Estha (male) was molested at a theatre by a man who worked there. Estha doesn't speak. It is a very sad story, starting with the death of a small child followed by a 23-year separation of twins Estha and Rahel.

The book features a number of words in the Malayalam spoken in Kerala, India. Arundhati Roy writes in a lively, vivid style and has an artist's eye for color. Here are a couple of brief excerpts:

"May in Ayemenem is a hot, brooding month. The days are long and humid. The river shrinks and black crows gorge on bright mangoes in still, dustgreen trees. Red bananas ripen. Jackfruits burst. Dissolute bluebottles hum vacuously in the fruity air. ... Pepper vines snake up electric poles. ... In the undergrowth a rat snake rubbed itself against a glistening stone. Hopeful yellow bullfrogs cruised the scummy pond for mates."(pp. 3,4) ...

"They never did look much like each other, Estha and Rahel, and even when they were thin-armed children, flat-chested, wormridden and Elvis Presley-puffed, there was none of the usual 'Who is who?' and 'Which is which?'" (p. 4)

beautiful book I've read so far
By Nick
Probably the most well written, beautiful book I've read so far. I've re-read it 3 times now even though I rarely reread books. A wonderful read, but I've posted some warnings about content but marked it below because it does contain some spoilers:

The warning I would give is (spoilers)

There is a child sexual assault, domestic violence, and other really heavy topics, so its not a happy read, and definitely might need some breaks

(spoiler over)
